After days of heartbreak, uncertainty, and relentless searching, an Iowa Navy veteran finally received the news he had been desperately hoping for. Scott Baker’s beloved service dog, Mal’i, who disappeared after being struck by a vehicle during a family trip to Jacksonville, Florida, has been found safe. The emotional reunion brought an end to a stressful ordeal that left Baker unable to think about returning home without her. Thanks to the determination of volunteers, local residents, and animal advocates, Mal’i was located and reunited with the family that never gave up hope.

Mal’i, Baker’s 4-year-old American Staffordshire service dog, was found safe in Jacksonville’s Sutton Lakes neighborhood just after midnight on Thursday. After days of uncertainty, worry, and community-wide efforts, the beloved dog was reunited with her family.
According to Baker, Mal’i suffered only minor cuts and was scheduled to receive a full veterinary evaluation following her rescue.
“We’re thrilled that she was found,” Baker told First Coast News. “I definitely want to thank the community, thank Jacksonville.”
The emotional reunion came after a frightening ordeal that began over the weekend.
While visiting Jacksonville to help their son move into an apartment, the Baker family experienced a devastating setback. On Saturday morning, Mal’i was outside near Atlantic Boulevard and the LUX Apartments behind the Cinemark theater when she was struck by a truck. The driver reportedly left the scene without stopping.
Startled and likely injured, Mal’i ran away after the collision and disappeared.
Baker’s daughter was with the dog when it happened.
“My daughter was outside with Molly and letting her go to the bathroom, and she screamed,” Baker recalled. “We heard the scream, but we didn’t realize it was her or what was going on.”
A Service Dog Who Means Everything

For Baker, Mal’i is much more than a pet.
She has been part of the family since she was six months old and plays a vital role in helping him manage post-traumatic stress disorder. Every night, she stays by his side, providing reassurance and helping him through difficult moments.
“I have PTSD and she sleeps with me at night,” Baker said. “She wakes me up when I have episodes and lets me know everything is okay.”
Without her, the veteran said he struggled to rest and could not imagine returning to Iowa without knowing she was safe.
As the days passed, volunteers, local residents, Animal Care and Protective Services, and community leaders joined the search effort. Flyers were shared, sightings were investigated, and concerned neighbors kept watch for the missing dog. Some believed Mal’i may have been hiding because of fear and confusion. Injured animals often seek quiet places to recover, and after being hit by a vehicle, she was likely frightened and disoriented.
Despite being in an unfamiliar city, Baker found comfort in the overwhelming support from strangers.
“It makes me feel so warm that there is such a caring community,” he said during the search. “That’s giving me hope.”
That hope ultimately paid off.
When Mal’i was finally located, it marked the end of an exhausting chapter for both the dog and her family. After days spent alone following the accident, she was able to return to the people who never stopped looking for her.

The story serves as a reminder of the powerful bond between service dogs and the people who depend on them. It also highlights how a compassionate community can come together when someone is in need.
For Scott Baker and his family, the outcome was the one they had been longing for all along: Mal’i was finally back where she belonged, safe at home with the people who love her.
