Forced To Live In a Tiny Cage, Pit Bull Becomes Dwarfed. See His Happy Ending!

| January 16, 2015

A young pit bull nicknamed “Gargoyle” because of his deformed appearance was taken in by Second Chance Rescue NYC Dogs after they got a disturbing call from a shelter.

While most rescue workers have “seen it all,” Landis’s condition was truly horrific. On their Facebook page, the rescue group’s reaction is one of pure disbelief:

“With all the horror stories we have seen and shared this year, words like ‘heartbreaking’ don’t seem to mean much anymore. It’s really sad, as we shouldn’t have to use them so often.
That said, there really is no better word to describe ‘Gargoyle’ who we received a plea on from a GA shelter last night. This sweetheart of a boy is said to be 1-2 years old and as you can see, he is dwarfed. He is emaciated, his legs are basically, folded in half and his spine is curved. To look at him, you would guess he’d been forced to grow up in & live in a small cage. Well, guess what, you’d be right!! Where do these monsters come from that walk among us?!”

Second Chance Rescue NYC took Gargoyle in and renamed him “Landis.” Along with a new name, he got a new leash on life.

The rescue immediately took him to get the medical treatment he needed. On their Facebook page, they let everyone know that the orthopedic specialist did not recommended surgery because Landis’s legs were continually showing improvement and he was not showing signs of pain. The surgery would be very painful, they explained, and may have required him to have more surgery in one to two years.

Instead, they asked for a home for Landis’s without hard surfaces to walk on and were he could have hydrotherapy.

And he got just that.

Landis’s new home is in Massachusetts, near Cape Cod. “He is minutes from the beach (sand will be great for his legs), has a large fenced in back yard & will immediately start hydrotherapy 5 minutes from his new home! He will have 2 rescue siblings and a new mom who is home to tend to his needs,” Second Change Rescue NYC Dogs posted on Facebook.

Project Landis, the Facebook page that was created to let people follow him in his recovery, had a recent update from his new mom:

I have made great progress today. I’m getting the hang of potty training in just one day and I love to sit in my Mom’s lap and chew on my toys. I’m even learning how to play ball!
