Five years ago, Caramel was simply a stray dog wandering outside a gym, with no way of knowing that one chance encounter was about to change his entire life. A man named Vladimir noticed the pup and decided to bring him home, offering him the safety and companionship he had been missing. At first, Caramel appeared much like any other rescued dog settling into unfamiliar surroundings. But as the weeks passed, Vladimir began noticing a remarkable change. Caramel’s skin was becoming unusually loose, gradually forming soft folds that seemed to grow more noticeable by the month.

“His skin started to sag and get really flabby,” Vladimir explained in a TikTok video.
The change happened gradually, but within a few months, there was no mistaking it. Caramel’s skin had become so loose and droopy that Vladimir knew something unusual was happening and wanted to understand why.
He took Caramel to a veterinarian, hoping for an explanation. Instead, the mystery continued because the veterinarians had never encountered a dog with skin quite like his. Vladimir kept searching for answers. After Caramel’s third or fourth veterinary visit, he finally learned what was behind the pup’s unusual appearance.
A Rare Diagnosis Finally Brings Answers
Caramel was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, commonly known as EDS. It is a group of genetic connective tissue disorders that can occur in humans and several animal species, including dogs. In Caramel’s case, the condition affects the collagen that helps support his skin. This can result in skin that is unusually stretchy and loose.
“The best way to describe it is that his collagen doesn’t work properly,” Vladimir explained. “It basically doesn’t keep his skin close to his body.”
What Is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome?
Ehlers-Danlos syndrome refers to a group of inherited disorders involving collagen, an important protein that helps provide strength and structure to connective tissues throughout the body. In dogs, a similar condition is sometimes called cutaneous asthenia, and one of its most recognizable signs is unusually stretchy, loose, or fragile skin. The severity can vary from one animal to another. Some affected dogs may be more prone to skin tearing, bruising, or wounds because their skin lacks normal strength, making protection from unnecessary friction and injury especially important. There is no simple cure for the underlying collagen abnormality, so care generally focuses on protecting the dog’s skin and managing any problems that develop.

Learning the cause gave Vladimir a clearer understanding of Caramel’s needs. Most importantly, his veterinarians confirmed that Caramel’s condition was not causing him pain. That means the lovable pup can enjoy many of the same everyday pleasures as other dogs. He can run around, head out for long walks, and settle beside his favorite person for a comfortable cuddle. Because Caramel’s condition can make his skin more sensitive, Vladimir takes a few extra precautions. He avoids putting collars and shirts on him, helping reduce unnecessary rubbing or irritation against his delicate skin.
Some people have suggested surgically removing Caramel’s excess skin. However, because the underlying condition affects his connective tissue, removing the loose skin would not solve what causes it. His skin would eventually begin sagging again. Vladimir also sees no reason to change the dog he loves. To him, Caramel’s folds are simply another part of the pup’s personality and appearance, even when all that loose skin creates some amusing situations around the house.
“His skin seeps into all sides of the couch and leaves us with, like, two inches of sitting room,” Vladimir joked on TikTok, adding that it was “only a slight exaggeration.”
Caramel may require plenty of couch space, but his unusual appearance has also helped him connect with people far beyond his home. Over the past year, Vladimir has shared videos of Caramel on TikTok, where the wonderfully wrinkled pup has attracted thousands of admirers. Viewers are fascinated by his folds, but many also respond to his relaxed personality and the obvious affection between him and Vladimir.
Some of the most meaningful reactions have come from people who also live with EDS. Seeing an animal with a similar condition thrive and be celebrated exactly as he is has given some viewers a special connection to Caramel.
“I love him so much,” one commenter wrote, joking that all his extra skin could be used to “wrap him up like a burrito.” Another viewer affectionately described the pup as lying in his own “puddle,” capturing the funny way Caramel’s folds spread around him whenever he gets comfortable.

What began five years ago with a stray dog outside a gym has grown into a life filled with security, long walks, cozy naps, and plenty of affection. Caramel may look different from most dogs Vladimir meets, but those differences have never stopped him from enjoying the life he was given.
His loose skin may be the first thing strangers notice, but it is hardly the most important thing about him. Behind all those remarkable folds is a happy rescued dog who found someone willing to understand his needs and love every wrinkle exactly as it is.
