A priest gathered with a woman in prayer, but one particularly devoted member of the group apparently decided the moment required an extra paw. Sitting quietly beside the woman was Simón, a rescued dog who has become a familiar presence at a church in Villavicencio, Colombia. As Father Carlos Mario Peña Lopera continued the prayer, Simón watched attentively from his chair. Then the dog slowly lifted one paw and stretched it toward the priest.

Father Carlos did not hesitate. He gently took Simón’s paw in his hand and continued praying, creating a tender moment that beautifully captured the extraordinary bond between a priest and the dog who has spent years faithfully by his side.

“Simón helping in the prayer,” Father Carlos wrote when sharing the touching moment.

For anyone familiar with Simón, however, his participation may not have been quite as surprising as it looked. This former street dog has spent years accompanying Father Carlos and becoming part of parish life. Somewhere along the way, Simón seems to have decided that when his favorite priest has work to do, he should probably be there to help.

Simón Was Once a Dog With Nowhere to Go

Long before he had a chair during prayer or people around the world watching his adventures, Simón was a mixed-breed dog living on the streets. Father Carlos rescued him after finding him abandoned in Villavicencio, giving the homeless dog the safety and companionship he had been missing.

Simón was not the only dog to receive a second chance. Luna, another rescued dog, also became part of Father Carlos’s life, and the pair have spent more than six years accompanying him and becoming familiar faces around the Santo Domingo Savio parish.

Their lives today look remarkably different from the uncertainty they once knew. Simón and Luna are affectionately regarded as four-legged members of the parish community, staying close to Father Carlos as he goes about his ministry and making themselves comfortable around the church. They are not always silent observers, either.

The Church Choir Has Gone to the Dogs

Simón and Luna have become especially popular online for another unusual contribution to parish life: they like to sing. In videos shared from the church, Father Carlos can be heard leading worship while his canine companions enthusiastically bark and howl along. Their voices may not technically belong in any traditional choir, but enthusiasm certainly does not seem to be a problem.

Rather than being hurried away for interrupting, the dogs remain close to the priest while adding their own unmistakable sound to the worship around them. Their performances have delighted people online, with videos of the pair “singing” during services attracting millions of views.

For the parish community, however, seeing Simón and Luna near Father Carlos has become part of everyday life. The dogs regularly accompany him during pastoral activities, making their appearances much more than a funny moment staged for social media.

One day, they might be near the altar. Another day, they might decide the music needs backup vocals. And when a moment of prayer calls for everyone to gather close, Simón apparently knows exactly where he wants to be.

Simón Offers His Paw During Prayer

The recent prayer video reveals a quieter side of the lovable church dog. Simón is not barking, bouncing around, or attempting to contribute to the music. Instead, he sits remarkably calmly beside a woman as Father Carlos and others gather around her in prayer.

Then Simón reaches out. His paw stretches toward Father Carlos, who notices the gesture and gently takes it without breaking the prayer. For a few moments, priest and dog remain connected by that outstretched paw while the people around them continue praying.

It is an incredibly simple gesture, but that simplicity is part of what makes the scene so moving. Simón did not need to do anything dramatic to become part of the moment. He simply wanted to be close, and Father Carlos welcomed him there.

The sight becomes even more touching knowing where their story began. Years earlier, Father Carlos had been the one to reach out to Simón when the abandoned dog needed someone. Now Simón was reaching back.

Simón Seems to Know When Someone Needs Him

The prayer was not the first time Simón’s attentiveness to the people around him had stood out. According to reports about the parish dogs, Simón and Luna once began barking when an older adult fainted, drawing attention to the situation so the person could receive assistance.

It is another example of how deeply the dogs have become woven into the community surrounding Father Carlos. They may have entered his life as animals in need of rescue, but over the years, their presence has brought companionship, laughter, and comfort to the people around them.

For dogs who once needed someone else to notice them, there is something particularly meaningful about seeing them become such cherished members of a place where people notice and care for them right back.

Simón Has Found His Place Beside the Priest

After years of accompanying Father Carlos, Simón has become a familiar presence during moments of worship, prayer, and ministry. He has watched from beside the altar, added his own voice to songs of praise, and stayed close as the priest serves the people around him. So when Simón quietly reached out his paw during prayer, the gesture felt beautifully in keeping with the life he has come to know.

There was something especially touching about the way Father Carlos responded. He did not laugh, move Simón away, or allow the dog’s participation to interrupt the prayer. He simply reached down, took Simón’s paw in his hand, and continued, creating a tender image of faith, compassion, and the extraordinary bond that has grown between a priest and the dog he once rescued from the streets.

For the people who have followed Simón’s story, moments like this have become part of what makes him so beloved. The once-abandoned dog now has a place beside Father Carlos and within a parish community where his presence is welcomed, whether he is sitting quietly during prayer or enthusiastically joining a song.

Simón’s journey is also a beautiful reminder of how dramatically one act of compassion can change a life. Father Carlos once saw a homeless dog who needed someone to stop and care. Years later, that same dog is still beside him, offering his paw during prayer and sharing in the daily life of the community that became his home.

Perhaps that is what makes the image of Father Carlos holding Simón’s paw so powerful. Long ago, a priest extended compassion to a dog who had nowhere to belong. Today, Simón has a home, a community, a canine companion in Luna, and a place beside the man who gave him a second chance. And when it is time to pray, Simón apparently has no intention of being left out.
