Wabby had no idea why the people he once depended on were suddenly gone. Why the UK’s XL Bully Restrictions May Have Mattered

Wabby’s story unfolded against the backdrop of major changes to dog ownership laws in the UK. XL Bully-type dogs were added to the list of prohibited dogs under the Dangerous Dogs Act, with restrictions beginning in late 2023 and additional ownership requirements taking effect in 2024.

One detail is particularly relevant to dogs like Wabby because the law does not rely solely on a dog’s breed name or pedigree. Authorities use a physical conformation standard to determine whether a dog is considered an XL Bully type, looking at characteristics including height, build, head shape, and other physical features.

For dogs legally classified as XL Bullies, the restrictions are significant. Among other requirements, exempt dogs must be kept on a lead and muzzled in public, while selling, giving away, or transferring ownership of an XL Bully is prohibited.

Fina believes those rules may help explain why Wabby ended up on the streets, although there is no way to know exactly what his previous owners were thinking. She says Wabby falls just under the criteria for an XL Bully, but suspects his powerful appearance may have been enough to make his former family fearful of the potential consequences. Whatever happened before he was found remains unknown, and Wabby could not explain how he ended up alone.

At the shelter, time quickly became the biggest concern. Wabby’s owners had seven days to come forward and claim him, but nobody arrived. As those days passed, his future became increasingly uncertain. A Long Journey to Bring Wabby Home

His gentle personality has become especially clear around the people who visit his home. Wabby has shown a calm and affectionate nature around children with special needs as well as elderly visitors, and his warmth has made him a favorite among those who meet him.

For Fina, responsible ownership remains important. Wabby is muzzle-trained, although she says he is not legally required to wear one. She also remains mindful of his physical strength and takes sensible precautions because even a gentle, powerful dog needs thoughtful handling.

Wabby’s story is ultimately about what can happen when an animal is given the opportunity to be known for who they really are. Once abandoned and facing an uncertain future, he now has a family, canine companions, and people who appreciate his affectionate personality.
