This year definitely wasn’t a conventional Easter. Families had to find unique ways to celebrate without having a big gathering due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, many people still found ways to have fun on a cheerful holiday. In fact, some dogs had an amazing Easter celebration too.

Always & Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary in Miami County, Kansas hosted a special Easter egg hunt for the dogs staying with them. They figured it would be a great way for the dogs to get some fresh air and have an exciting day.

Easter For Senior Dogs

Always & Furever is a special organization that provides a safe space for the dogs that need it the most. This includes dogs who were abandoned or abused as well as many senior dogs. At this sanctuary, the dogs don’t have to sit around in kennels, but instead, they get a beautiful home environment to stay at, complete with couches and beds to nap on. They get to spend their time in this comfortable space while they wait for a forever family.

To make time at the sanctuary even more special for these dogs, volunteers decided to celebrate a special holiday with them. A few kind volunteers got together to create an Easter egg hunt for some of the senior dogs. Despite a bit of rainy weather, they scattered the eggs outside for the dogs to find.

Of course, this egg hunt didn’t consist of your typical candy prizes though. Instead, the volunteers chose some tasty snacks that they knew the dogs would adore.

“We put peanut butter and string cheese and hot dogs,” said Jennifer Dulski with Always & Furever. “We snuck hot dogs into their dinner.”

The dogs had an amazing time sniffing out their Easter treats. Because of COVID-19, the volunteers are always coming up with new, creative ways to keep the dogs entertained. However, since they can’t have visitors constantly coming in and out of the building, they’ve had to find new ways to let people meet with the dogs.

Helping Adoptable Dogs During COVID-19

Even though Always & Furever had to cancel and postpone their public events, they knew there was still a way to help out during this difficult time. So, they are launching a new program called ‘Drive By Doggo Date’. This new event will allow people to still interact with the dogs without putting anyone in danger.

Anyone interested in this program can just drive up, and a volunteer will bring a dog out to them. Then, they can have a date with the dog to help that pup get out of the house and experience new things.

“We walk the dog out on a 6-foot leash, and the dog will probably jump right into your car,” Dulski said.

Both the egg hunt and the doggy date program are great ways for the dogs to still go out during this strange time. Dogs need to go outside and enjoy the world, so the volunteers will continue to make sure they get that. If you live near this Kansas organization, please consider taking a dog on a date!
