Gregg Wexler never imagined that one small dog would come to define resilience in such a profound and personal way. What began as a simple adoption soon became a lifelong journey filled with unexpected challenges, deep compassion, and unwavering devotion. From the very beginning, Sammy brought warmth and energy into Gregg’s life, but over the years, he would also become a powerful symbol of courage. Through hardship, recovery, and daily perseverance, this little dog would go on to touch countless hearts far beyond the walls of his home.

Sammy, a dachshund and chihuahua mix, came into Gregg’s life as a playful seven-month-old puppy rescued from a gas chamber in the South. Back then, he was a pup full of energy and perfectly healthy. Gregg saw something special in him right away and gave him the safe, loving home he deserved. Years later, that bond would be tested in ways neither of them could have imagined.
At just three years old, Sammy suffered a devastating spinal injury. Whether it came from intervertebral disk disease or a sudden misstep in the yard, the result was the same. He was left paralyzed for weeks. Despite extensive treatment and more than $60,000 in medical care, Sammy never regained the ability to walk normally again.
His life changed overnight. Simple things like running across the yard or going to the bathroom became daily challenges. Sammy now relies on a wheelchair when he ventures outside and needs hands-on assistance for basic bodily functions due to nerve damage. At one point, a rare and complex genital procedure was required to save his life. It is a surgery more commonly performed in cats, making Sammy’s case even more unique.
All told, Sammy endured four major surgeries. Each one brought uncertainty, but he faced every hurdle with quiet resilience.
A Spirit That Refuses to Slow Down

Despite everything he has been through, Sammy does not live like a dog who has suffered. He lives like a dog who simply loves life.
Inside the house, he moves with determination. Outside, once strapped into his wheelchair, he becomes unstoppable. Gregg describes him as having only one speed. Fast. There is no hesitation in him, no sense of limitation. Sammy does not see himself as different.
What stands out most is his joy. His tail wags freely. His eyes light up at the sight of children. He leans into every pet, every kind word, every moment of connection.
Wherever he goes, people notice. Sammy has become something of a local celebrity. Crowds gather to meet him. Strangers ask about his story. Many leave feeling deeply moved, inspired by a dog who refuses to let hardship define him.
A few years ago, his impact was recognized in a special way. Sammy inspired a special-needs dog design featured on a shirt sold by Freedom Park, a local park in their area that offers an off-leash dog area where dogs can mingle and play. It was a small tribute to a dog who had already touched so many hearts.

Even more recently, Sammy showed off his playful side by winning six consecutive Halloween costume contests in 2025. Each win added to his growing reputation, but for Sammy, it was just another chance to be part of the fun.
Gregg once dreamed of training Sammy as a therapy dog. That plan had to be put on hold after the accident, but in many ways, Sammy still fulfills that role every day. His presence alone brings comfort and joy to those around him.

He has visited community spaces such as the Boys and Girls Club and holds an honorary membership in the Miracle League of Mercer County. Soon, he will attend a Special Olympics event in New Jersey, continuing to spread his quiet message of resilience.
Sammy does not know he is different. He does not dwell on what he cannot do. He simply wakes up each day ready to move, love, and live fully.
And in doing so, he reminds everyone who meets him that strength is not about physical ability. It is about heart.
