When Veterinarian Ali Thompson first saw Bunny- a small, lifeless puppy brought into the veterinary clinic by a receptionist- she immediately recognized the signs of tetanus. Bunny’s ears were pinned back, her lips were pulled into a ‘sardonic grin,’ and she trembled severely. It was heartbreaking to see the frightened pup, who was mentally aware but physically incapacitated.
Bunny’s owner, unable to afford the costly medical treatment required, made the difficult decision to give her up. The first night of Bunny’s treatment was incredibly challenging. Ali provided round-the-clock care, administering medication and tending to her every need. To help minimize stimulation and promote healing, Ali kept Bunny’s eyes covered for a full 14 days.
Throughout the process, Bunny’s fighting spirit was evident. Each morning, when Ali gently spoke to her, Bunny’s tail would wag enthusiastically. Despite her physical limitations, Bunny seemed determined to recover and began showing signs of improvement.
After two weeks, Bunny was able to go outside for the first time. Her excitement at seeing Ali was palpable, and she quickly propped herself up to greet her caretaker. This moment of strength and bravery was a turning point in Bunny’s recovery.
Soon after, Bunny reached another milestone: she took her first steps. Upon returning home from work, Ali’s husband placed Bunny on the grass, and the little pup eagerly followed Ali across the yard. This emotional moment brought tears of joy to Ali’s eyes as she realized just how far Bunny had come.
Initially, Ali had no plans to keep Bunny. However, as the weeks passed and the bond between them grew stronger, it became clear that Bunny had found her forever home. Ali’s husband agreed, and Bunny became a permanent member of their family.
