For two years, Peter’s world was incomplete. The day his dog Charlie disappeared still haunted him—her absence left a hole nothing else could fill. Peter, now navigating life in a wheelchair after a car accident, relied on his loyal companion for comfort and emotional support. She had been there through the toughest days, offering love when the rest of the world felt distant. His friends did what they could to lift his spirits, but Peter’s thoughts always drifted back to Charlie.

Each morning, he’d sit by the window, watching the street and hoping for a miracle. Though he never gave up entirely, time had made the dream of seeing her again feel more like wishful thinking. Then, one evening, the phone rang. “Peter,” Alex’s voice came through, trembling with excitement. “I think we’ve found her.”

Peter froze, his heart pounding. “What? You found who?” he asked. “Charlie,” Alex said. “Not only found her—she’s here.”

The words barely registered. “What do you mean she’s here?” Peter asked breathlessly, but the line went dead before Alex could explain further. A few seconds later, the doorbell rang. With his hands shaking, Peter wheeled himself toward the door, trying to prepare for whatever waited on the other side. He reached out, turned the handle, and opened it.

There, standing just outside, was Charlie. Her once-shiny coat looked a little ragged, and she was thinner than he remembered, but her eyes… those eyes were unmistakable. They were filled with recognition and longing. For a moment, neither of them moved. Charlie took a small step forward, then another, as if checking to see if this was real.

Finally, she couldn’t hold back. Charlie rushed forward, climbing into Peter’s lap. Her tail wagged as she covered his face with happy, frantic kisses. Peter’s laughter mixed with tears, his arms wrapping tightly around her. “I missed you so much,” he whispered, pressing his face into her fur.

Shortly after being released, he became overcome by rage and frustration and began violently wailing on his poor, trembling, frightened dog. It's clear that this man's violent tendencies didn't decrease after serving his time.

Behind them, Alex stood quietly, holding a bag of supplies. “It wasn’t easy,” he said softly, his eyes filled with relief. “But we knew we had to bring her home to you.” For Peter, it felt like the missing piece of his heart had finally been returned. After two years of waiting, Charlie was home, and life, at last, felt whole again.
