Shelter Dog Meal Donation Count:
A Riverside County, CA Sheriff’s Deputy apparently shot himself Wednesday while trying to kill a “large” pit bull he claimed was threatening his life. The officer had entered the property to serve an eviction notice. Ironically, a news TV station later captured a picture of a much smaller dog than reported playing peacefully with children.
“A dog came at the deputy in an aggressive manner,” said Deputy Armando Munoz said, according to The Press-Enterprise. “The deputy, pulled his service weapon, shot one round, and injured himself in the leg.”
Fortunately, the injury is not life threatening and both the deputy and the dog will be ok.
When the authorities arrived, they found the pit bull calmly confined to his pen. Although the dog was barking at the officer after he entered the property, there was no evidence the owner had done anything wrong so animal services did not take the dog into custody.
In our view, it seems that breed stereotypes continue to lead to situations like this. Of course a guard dog will bark at a strange intruder to the property. We wish that the police officer could have insisted the dog be restrained before he entered to serve the eviction notice. With that said, we wish him well and a fast recovery!
