On a late December night, someone in Chhattisgarh, India, abandoned their newborn baby, so young the umbilical cord was still attached. With no clothing or nutrition, the little girl’s chances of survival were very slim.
Fortunately, a local stray dog had just given birth to a litter of puppies. The dog found the baby naked in a field and brought her over to the place where her puppies rested. Nestled alongside the group of dogs, the fragile baby stayed warm enough to endure cold overnight temperatures.
Eventually, locals in the village overheard the baby’s cries the next day. They found her lying with the puppies, unharmed. The dogs essentially took this abandoned human in as one of their own.
An anonymous local who spoke to the news about the discovery said:
“It’s possibly the warmth from puppies and their mother itself [that] had kept this newborn alive. Usually, the temperature dips at night … I must say, it’s her sheer luck.”
People may mistrust stray dogs, but these pups took better care of a baby than her own parents did.
The Miracle Of Dogs
As newborn babies require constant care and attention, it’s simply miraculous that this one survived out in the cold. While other people in the village were quick to help once they found the child, it’s likely this girl would never have made it without the care of the stray dog and her puppies.
A local representative, Munnalal Patel, revealed the villagers felt shocked and appalled at what they found.
“At 11 in the morning, we saw that there is a newborn baby girl who was crying and lying alongside puppies in our village. We panicked and informed the health department before the newborn was taken to the hospital for further checkup.”
After police learned of the situation, the baby (now named Akanksha) was later referred to the ChildLine Project, a foundation dedicated to helping children in need. Police are still searching for the parents of this cruelly abandoned child. One resident, Premnath, noted:
“They are not parents, they are criminals. It is a miracle only to find newborn baby surviving when stray dogs are lurking every now and then at the dead of the night.”
We are so lucky that dogs are naturally inclined to help humans, stray or not. This baby certainly owes her life to that fact.
