Unlike other shelter dogs waiting to be adopted, one particular dog took matters into his own paws – and he did it with flair! Scout, a resident of the Antrim County Animal Shelter in Bellaire, Michigan, felt the shelter wasn’t quite right for him. So, he took action. Night after night, Scout made his escape, heading straight to the nursing home across the street.
His destination was the Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire, Michigan. This wasn’t a one-time escapade. Scout repeatedly broke out of the shelter and returned to the nursing home, as if declaring, “This is where I belong, humans!”

The journey to Meadow Brook was no easy feat. Scout had to scale several fences, brave crossing a highway, and then slip through the automatic doors of the facility. Curiously, he would always enter the nursing home under the cover of night, and upon entry, he’d promptly find comfort on a leather couch in the lobby. Initially, the staff at Meadow Brook ensured Scout’s return to the shelter. However, after witnessing his repeated, determined returns, they sensed something about their facility resonated with Scout, bringing him peace and joy. Eventually, they welcomed him as a permanent member of their community.
Jennifer Martinek from MBMCF reflected, “When Scout kept coming back, we felt maybe it was fate.”
Scout did more than just reside at the nursing home. He evolved into a compassionate, instinctive caregiver, quickly winning the hearts of everyone there.
One resident remarked, “When you’re feeling down or things are tough, Scout lifts your spirits. He’s truly content here.”

What’s most touching is Scout’s affection for residents battling terminal illnesses and dementia. It’s as though he intuitively understands their need for extra comfort and provides it lovingly. The MBMCF staff expressed on their Facebook, “We can’t imagine life without him now. He’s an integral part of our Meadow Brook family.”

The reason behind Scout’s empathetic nature and his affinity for the elderly remains a mystery. All that’s known of his past is that he endured an abusive household.
