On the morning of September 21, 2021, Stephanie Reed was walking her dog, Klaus, a 3-year-old mix, near her home in the District. She briefly stepped inside her house to grab something, leaving Klaus outside. When she returned, Klaus was gone.

Reed quickly realized that her dog had been taken by a woman who had just boarded a Metrobus. She immediately sprang into action, chasing after the bus on foot and then by car, determined to rescue her beloved pet.

“I was like, ‘You stole my dog! You stole my dog!'” Reed recalled, describing her frantic pursuit of the bus. “I was just running, running, running.”

Reed managed to catch up to the bus at a nearby stop, where she confronted the woman who had taken Klaus. The woman claimed that she thought Klaus was a stray and had intended to take him to a shelter. Toon, however, was not convinced.

“I said, ‘No, you didn’t. You stole my dog,'” Reed recounted. “I said, ‘Give me my dog back.'”

Thankfully, the bus driver intervened, and Klaus was safely returned to Reed. The driver also called the police, who arrived on the scene to investigate the incident. The woman who took Klaus was not charged, as it was determined that she had not intended to steal the dog.

Reed is grateful to have her beloved pet back and credits her quick thinking and determination for the successful rescue. She also expressed her appreciation for the bus driver’s assistance in the ordeal.

“I just want to thank the bus driver,” Reed said. “He was really nice. He was really helpful.”

Reed’s dramatic chase to rescue Klaus demonstrates the lengths to which pet owners will go to ensure the safety and well-being of their beloved companions.
