Tricycle is a three-legged Golden Retriever rescue dog residing at the Horse Creek Stable Rescue Sanctuary in Mineral Bluff, Georgia. His story is a poignant testament to the emotional depth animals possess. The sanctuary is home to a variety of animals with special needs, including horses, goats, alpacas, llamas, and other dogs like Tricycle. Each resident has a unique story, but Tricycle’s tale of loyalty and grief stands out.
Six years ago, a new resident named Major arrived at the sanctuary. Major, a St. Bernard-mastiff mix, was in a dire state. He suffered from severe back issues, which left him unable to walk. Despite his struggles, he quickly formed an inseparable bond with Tricycle. The two dogs became best friends, finding comfort and companionship in each other.
Major’s past was marred by abuse, which ultimately led to his tragic demise. The injuries inflicted by his previous owner were too severe for him to survive. When Major crossed the rainbow bridge, the sanctuary owners, Lester Aradi and his wife, Diane, were heartbroken. They buried Major in a makeshift plot on their farm, hoping to provide him with a peaceful resting place.
Tricycle stayed close to Major throughout the burial process, a silent witness to his friend’s departure. The next day, Lester and Diane were taken aback when they discovered Tricycle lying next to Major’s grave. This heartrending sight revealed the depth of Tricycle’s sorrow. Whenever he was outside, he would lie on Major’s grave, staring into the distance, unable to comprehend his friend’s absence.
ragedy struck again two years ago during the pandemic. This time, Tricycle lost another dear friend, a 21-year-old alpaca named Trixie. The sanctuary, which had become a haven for these special animals, was once again a place of mourning. Trixie’s death was another heavy blow to Tricycle’s heart.
Just as he had done before, Tricycle spent his days lying on Trixie’s grave, his eyes searching for a friend who would never return. The bond he shared with Trixie was evident in his unwavering presence at her resting place. His grief was palpable, a silent testimony to the emotional bonds animals are capable of forming.
At Horse Creek Stable Rescue Sanctuary, the Aradis have made it a tradition to honor their deceased animals with dignity and respect. Every animal that passes away is given a burial on the farm. “Every animal that has passed over the Rainbow Bridge has been buried on our farm so their spirits can live on where they spent the latter years of their lives,” Lester explained.
For smaller animals like cats and dogs, the graves are marked with circles of stones. For larger animals, the sanctuary plants fruit-bearing trees over their graves. These trees symbolize the continuation of life, turning a place of mourning into a place of growth and renewal. When the trees bear fruit, visiting children are invited to pick them, creating a living memorial to the animals that once brought joy to the sanctuary.
Tricycle’s story has touched the hearts of many. The sanctuary even released a book detailing his life and the emotional journey he has been on. His tale of loyalty, love, and grief serves as a powerful reminder that animals are capable of deep emotions. They form friendships, experience loss, and, like humans, they grieve.
