The Chinese Crested is an undeniably unique and charming breed, instantly recognizable with its hairless body and wild tufts of fur. However, beyond their standout looks, these playful pups have a fascinating history and quirky characteristics that often fly under the radar. If you’re a fan of this breed or just curious, get ready to be surprised by these nine fun facts that highlight just how special Chinese Cresteds truly are.

They Aren’t Actually From China

Despite their name, Chinese Cresteds are believed to have originated from Africa. These dogs were once called “African Hairless Terriers” until they were brought onto Chinese ships, where they played the crucial role of ratters. Over time, their name evolved due to their connection with Chinese sailors, but their African roots are a little-known fact.

They Come in Two Variants: Hairless and Powderpuff

Chinese Cresteds come in two distinct types: the Hairless and the Powderpuff. The Hairless variety has smooth skin with furry tufts on the head, feet, and tail, while the Powderpuff has a full, soft coat. Interestingly, both types can be born in the same litter, as the Powderpuff gene is recessive, making this genetic twist a delightful surprise for breeders.

They Were Famous Rat Catchers on Ships

Centuries ago, Chinese sailors valued these dogs for their excellent rat-hunting skills. The small, agile dogs could easily navigate ship decks and kept the ships free of disease-carrying rodents. Their effectiveness at catching rats made them a prized companion on long voyages, contributing to their spread across the world.

They Have an Unusually High Tolerance for Heat

Chinese Cresteds are known for their surprising heat tolerance, thanks to their largely hairless bodies. This trait is likely an adaptation from their ancestors, who thrived in warmer climates. However, because they have minimal fur, they’re also sensitive to the cold and may need sweaters or jackets in cooler weather.

They’re One of the Few Breeds Prone to Acne

Believe it or not, the Hairless Chinese Crested can suffer from skin conditions similar to those in humans, like acne. Their sensitive skin requires regular care and moisturizing to keep it healthy. Owners should be prepared to use hypoallergenic products and even sunscreen to protect their dogs from breakouts and sunburn.

They Have Rabbit-Like Feet

A quirky characteristic of the Chinese Crested is their elongated, hare-like feet. This unusual feature gives them better grip and makes them excellent climbers. It’s said that these unique feet make them more agile and enable them to perform some pretty impressive acrobatics, which will leave you smiling at their antics.

Chinese Cresteds have a long history of winning the annual World’s Ugliest Dog Competition. Their often quirky and unkempt appearance, especially in the Hairless variety, has earned them multiple titles over the years. But true Crested lovers know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and these dogs are full of personality and charm.

They Are Known for Their Extreme Loyalty

Chinese Cresteds are intensely loyal and form incredibly strong bonds with their owners. They are often called “Velcro dogs” because they love to be close to their favorite humans, following them from room to room. This deep attachment makes them excellent companions but can also lead to separation anxiety if not managed properly.

They Are More Cat-Like Than Dog-Like

Chinese Cresteds have some distinctly feline traits, from their independent yet affectionate nature to their tendency to climb and perch on furniture. They are graceful and prefer high places where they can observe their surroundings. Their ability to climb and their love of being up high only add to their charm as a breed.

Chinese Cresteds: More Than Just a Pretty (or Quirky) Face

Whether it’s their intriguing history or their playful, loyal personalities, Chinese Cresteds never fail to make a lasting impression. With their feline grace, heat tolerance, and unforgettable looks, these dogs are full of surprises that go far beyond their appearance. If you’re lucky enough to know one personally, you’ll appreciate all the love, laughter, and quirky traits they bring into your life
