Game of Thrones has birthed numerous trends since the show started airing in 2011. In 2012, over 160 baby girls were legally named “Khaleesi” after Emilia Clark’s character. Merchandise has popped up all over the internet and the books are selling like crazy.

Not all Game of Thrones-inspired trends have been harmless, though. Clueless fans who fell in love with the Stark’s gorgeous direwolves have decided to buy purebred Siberian Huskies in droves over the last few years – but as any dog lover can tell you, Huskies can be a handful. Inexperienced dog owners who didn’t do their research and bought them for their wolf-like appearance might be overwhelmed to learn that the breed needs lots of attention and an outlet for tons of energy.

The news of the dogs being bought just to be dumped is disturbing to say the least. Peter Dinklage, who plays Tyrion Lannister on Game of Thrones recently teamed up with PETA to speak out about the sad trend. He reminds fans to be responsible about taking in a dog, and stands by the saying, “Adopt, don’t shop.”

Fans can still show their support for the show the good old fashioned way – through T-shirts and strange fanfiction. Still gotta have a direwolf of your own but don’t have the time to dedicate to such a high-maintenance dog? You can adopt a grey wolf through the World Wildlife Fund to help actual endangered wolves, and your adoption kit will include a cute plush wolf of your own!
