A frightening search unfolded in Lutz after a 96-year-old man suddenly disappeared from his home, leaving loved ones terrified about where he could have gone. Surrounded by wooded terrain and difficult conditions, the situation quickly became urgent as deputies and emergency teams searched for any sign of him. With every passing minute, concern continued to grow for the elderly man’s safety, especially because of the risks that come with age, exhaustion, and exposure outdoors. Thankfully, the determined efforts of Hillsborough County deputies and one highly trained K 9 would soon bring an emotional and heartwarming ending to the terrifying ordeal.

On May 9, 2026, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 18000 block of 4th Street Southeast after Ray Cornett was reported missing. Family members and deputies feared the elderly man may have wandered into the surrounding wooded area, where uneven ground and dense brush could quickly become dangerous for someone his age.
As the search intensified, multiple specialty units joined the effort. Deputies carefully combed through the area while trying to remain hopeful that Cornett would be found safe. The wooded terrain made visibility difficult, and the thick vegetation slowed search crews as they pushed deeper into the area.
For Cornett’s loved ones, every passing moment felt heavier. At 96 years old, being alone outdoors for an extended period can quickly become life-threatening. Search teams understood the urgency and continued working tirelessly to locate him before conditions worsened.
Then K-9 Boomer entered the search.

Focused and determined, the highly trained K-9 worked through the wooded area, following clues invisible to the human eye. Boomer’s calm persistence eventually led deputies to Cornett, who was found a couple of hundred yards away from his home, hidden within the brush.
The discovery brought an immediate wave of relief.
After hours of fear and uncertainty, Cornett was safely located and reunited with his family. Deputies confirmed he returned home safely following the rescue, turning what could have become a heartbreaking tragedy into an inspiring moment of hope.
Boomer’s Training Made the Difference
K-9 teams play a critical role in searches involving vulnerable or endangered individuals. Dogs like Boomer are specially trained to track scents and navigate difficult terrain that can slow down human searchers. In situations where every second matters, their abilities often become the key to saving lives.
Boomer’s successful search once again highlighted the incredible partnership between law enforcement officers and their K-9 companions. While deputies coordinated the operation on the ground, Boomer’s instincts and training helped bring the search to a safe ending.
The rescue also served as a reminder of how quickly situations involving elderly individuals can become dangerous. Confusion, exhaustion, and environmental conditions can all create serious risks, especially in wooded or isolated areas.

Thankfully, this story ended with comfort instead of heartbreak.
Thanks to the dedication of #teamHCSO and Boomer’s remarkable work, Ray Cornett was found safe and brought back home to the people who care about him most. The emotional rescue left many in the community grateful for the deputies and K-9 teams who continue putting themselves on the front lines to protect others.
