Canine parvovirus is an extremely contagious disease that can be spread from direct or indirect contact with an infected dog’s feces or  through contact on infected topsoil. This disease is so aggressive that the mortality rate can be higher than 90%, particularly in puppies.

Shelters struggle with parvo and the Humane Society of Jefferson County was struggling more than most. After years of parvo outbreaks, the soil where their outdoor kennels sat was so heavily contaminated that adult vaccinated dogs were succumbing to the terrible disease. How can they continue rescuing animals if they can’t be let outside? Well, that is where GreaterGood.org’s Rescue Rebuild came in.

Numerous strategy meetings later, a plan was hatched of how to safely remove and contain eight inches of contaminated soil. By the time Rescue Rebuild was done, they had filled eight dump trucks full of infected soil. It was such a big undertaking, they had to recruit dozens of local volunteers.

To further protect the pups, the Rescue Rebuild team poured over 4,000 square feet of concrete in over 100-degree heat!

Battling the East Tennessee heat and humidity was a challenge, but 49 volunteers put in almost 6,000 hours, enabling Rescue Rebuild to install over 1,200 feet of chain link to create two huge 50’ x 50’ play yards for the dogs to run around and let out some of that pent-up energy, 8 new kennels, and two new 15’ x 15’ meet and greet pens!

And they didn’t stop there! The team also built a 25’ x 30’ Catty Shack which gave the kitties their own place, as well as an outdoor catio. They also constructed a shed for more storage area and fixed their flooding issues.
