Dog grooming goes far beyond aesthetics—it plays a crucial role in a dog’s well-being. When neglected, fur can become excessively long and matted, causing discomfort and even health problems. Many stray and abandoned dogs suffer from this neglect, but with some care and attention, they can be transformed into happy, healthy pets. This was exactly what happened recently when an animal rescue stepped in to help a severely neglected stray.

Ozarks Pet Rescue, a nonprofit organization in Missouri, took charge of the case of a Poodle mix, now named Larry, who had been roaming near a gas station in Norwood. The dog had been spotted numerous times, but efforts to catch him failed, leaving him on the streets for about eight months. During that time, Larry’s fur grew so long and tangled that it completely covered his eyes, adding to his discomfort and making him nearly unrecognizable.

Last month, however, Ozarks Pet Rescue, with the help of animal control and volunteers, was able to safely sedate Larry and bring him into their care. Once in the hands of rescuers, Larry underwent a health evaluation. While he tested negative for heartworms, he was diagnosed with tick disease and whipworms.

Understandably, Larry was nervous at first, but he slowly started to trust that the team was caring for him. “He even gave one of our board members a small kiss and a belly rub,” the rescue shared on Facebook. “He’s still timid, but with time and patience, he’ll come around.”

One of the biggest challenges Larry faced was his matted fur, which weighed down his small frame. During his much-needed grooming session, rescuers removed a staggering 3 pounds of tangled fur, reducing Larry’s body weight from 22 pounds to 19. The transformation was nothing short of amazing. The rescue shared before-and-after photos of Larry, leaving people online stunned by his new look.

“It’s hard to believe that sweet boy was hiding under all that matted fur,” one person commented. “He’s going to have a wonderful life, even if he’s still a little unsure right now. Thank you for saving him!” Another added, “He’s absolutely adorable! Thank you for giving him a second chance—I hope he finds the perfect home soon!”

Larry’s background remains a mystery. Although he was neutered, he didn’t have a microchip, and no owners have come forward yet. For now, he remains on stray hold while the rescue checks to see if anyone claims him.

Shortly after being released, he became overcome by rage and frustration and began violently wailing on his poor, trembling, frightened dog. It's clear that this man's violent tendencies didn't decrease after serving his time.

If no one comes forward, Larry will soon be ready for adoption once he finishes recovering. With so many people expressing interest in giving him a loving home, it seems likely that Larry’s future is finally looking bright.
