Now, after all his efforts, Tiki is still searching for the loving home he deserves.
Tiki, a 10-year-old dog with a big heart and even bigger desire for freedom, earned the nickname “escape artist” after he successfully broke out of his kennel not once, but twice. The Humane Society of Huron Valley recently hosted an “Empty the Shelters” event, aimed at finding homes for as many pets as possible. The shelter was bustling with activity, and Tiki, housed temporarily in a crate within the staff office due to overcrowding, saw his opportunity.
On the first night, Tiki managed to outwit everyone. He was carefully secured in his crate in the office before the staff left for the evening. But when they returned the next morning, they were met with quite a surprise. Tiki had not only escaped his crate, but he had also managed to navigate his way out of the office, through the front doors, and into the great outdoors.
“He was placed in his crate in the office when staff left for the night,” explained Tanya Hilgendorf, CEO of the Humane Society of Huron Valley, in an interview with MLive. “Amazingly, he figured out how to escape the crate, open the office door, and then walk out through our front doors.”
The staff, understandably shocked by Tiki’s impressive escape, quickly set about making sure he was safe. They found him a short time later, thankfully unharmed, and brought him back to the shelter. But Tiki wasn’t done yet. Despite the shelter taking extra precautions to secure him, the clever canine managed to escape a second time. This time, his breakout was captured on the shelter’s security cameras, adding to his growing legend.
Tiki’s second escape was just as daring as the first. The staff had reinforced his crate and made sure all doors were securely locked. Yet, somehow, Tiki once again freed himself from his enclosure and made his way out of the shelter. His determination was truly something to behold.
Fortunately, this time, Tiki didn’t venture too far. He was discovered by a group of good Samaritans at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens, a nearby location known for its scenic beauty and peaceful atmosphere. These kind-hearted individuals recognized that Tiki was a shelter dog and quickly returned him to the Humane Society, much to the relief of the staff.
