Every year, the American Kennel Club (AKC) releases its list of the most popular dog breeds in the United States, and while some rankings remain steady, others see surprising shifts. This year, a few beloved breeds fell out of the top 10, making room for some unexpected newcomers. The Cane Corso continues its rapid rise in popularity, proving that big, protective breeds are having a moment, while longtime favorites like the Beagle and Rottweiler shuffled positions. Will last year’s top dog keep its crown, or has a new breed stolen America’s heart? Let’s count down the most popular pups of 2025!

A high-energy hunting dog turned beloved family companion, the German Shorthaired Pointer is a perfect fit for active households. These sleek, athletic dogs are known for their intelligence and versatility, excelling in everything from agility training to dock diving. They require plenty of exercise and mental stimulation, but in return, they offer boundless loyalty and affection.

9. Rottweiler

Powerful, confident, and deeply devoted, the Rottweiler is a breed that commands respect. Originally bred as a cattle-driving dog, today’s Rotties are beloved as protective family guardians. They are intelligent and trainable but need early socialization and firm, consistent training. With the right upbringing, a Rottweiler is both a fearless protector and a big-hearted goofball.

8. Beagle

With their floppy ears and irresistible puppy-dog eyes, Beagles have been a favorite among American families for years. Initially bred for hunting, these small hounds have an incredible sense of smell and an adventurous spirit. Beagles are friendly, curious, and love being part of a pack—whether that’s a family with kids or a household with other pets.

7. Bulldog

Sturdy, affectionate, and full of personality, the Bulldog remains a staple in American homes. Despite their tough exterior, these dogs are known for their gentle, easygoing nature. Bulldogs love lounging around, making them perfect for city dwellers or anyone who enjoys a laid-back lifestyle. While their wrinkly faces require some extra care, their unwavering loyalty makes it all worth it.

6. Dachshund

Short in stature but big in personality, the Dachshund—also known as the “wiener dog”—is one of the most recognizable breeds in the world. These little hounds were bred for hunting, which explains their fearless attitude and independent streak. Whether in their smooth, long-haired, or wire-haired variety, Dachshunds are playful, loving companions who bring a lot of character into a household.

5. Poodle

Poodles are more than just fancy haircuts—they’re one of the most intelligent dog breeds out there. Available in three sizes (Standard, Miniature, and Toy), they’re adaptable to different lifestyles, whether in a city apartment or a sprawling suburban home. They are hypoallergenic, highly trainable, and love to learn new tricks, making them a favorite for families and dog enthusiasts alike.

4. German Shepherd

A breed known for its loyalty and intelligence, the German Shepherd is a true working dog. Whether serving in law enforcement, search and rescue, or as a devoted family protector, these dogs are fearless and highly trainable. They form deep bonds with their owners and thrive when given a job to do. With proper training and socialization, German Shepherds are some of the most reliable and loving companions.

3. Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers are the epitome of the perfect family dog—friendly, intelligent, and always ready to play. They’re known for their love of people, making them wonderful therapy and service dogs. Their golden coats and ever-wagging tails are a familiar sight in homes across the country. While they require regular exercise and grooming, their affectionate nature makes them one of America’s most cherished breeds.

2. Labrador Retriever

After reigning as the #1 breed for 31 years, the Labrador Retriever still holds strong as a favorite. Labs are outgoing, eager to please, and full of energy, making them ideal companions for active families. They are excellent swimmers and love a good game of fetch. Whether black, yellow, or chocolate, these lovable retrievers have a way of stealing hearts wherever they go.

1. French Bulldog

For the third year in a row, the French Bulldog takes the top spot as America’s most popular dog. These compact, bat-eared cuties have skyrocketed in popularity thanks to their affectionate, playful nature and low-maintenance lifestyle. Frenchies don’t require much exercise, making them perfect for apartment dwellers. Their expressive faces and charming personalities ensure they get plenty of attention—and they love every second of it.

The Future of America’s Favorite Breeds

While the top 10 breeds continue to dominate, a few up-and-comers are making waves and could shake up the rankings in the years to come. The Cane Corso, once a relatively unknown breed, has skyrocketed in popularity, proving that large, protective dogs are in demand. Meanwhile, mixed breeds and designer dogs like Labradoodles and Cavapoos continue to gain traction, even though they don’t make the AKC’s official list. No matter which breed tops the charts, one thing is certain—America’s love for dogs isn’t going anywhere, and every pup, whether purebred or rescue, deserves a loving home!
