Cpl. Dante Ferrell is an Internal Affairs officer with the Durham, NC police department who went above and beyond while off the clock. While passing by a neighbor’s house on his lunch break yesterday he saw smoke pouring from the home, and sprung into action.

Dante called the fire department, but when he saw the face of his neighbor’s Goldendoodle, Griffin, in a lower story window, he knew there was no time to waste. Immediately, he ran to the door and began to kicking repeatedly, hoping to knock it in. After only a few kicks, Dante was able to enter the home to check for people and rescue Griffin. Dante told WRAL News that he was concerned that Griffin might bite him, but they both managed to get out of the house without injury!

The Durham NC fire department believes that the homeowner put ashes that hadn’t cooled entirely into the trash along with yard waste, which began the fire.

The family lost their home and possessions, but thanks to Dante’s quick thinking, they didn’t lose Griffin – who they would not have been able to replace.
