The poor dog in this story spent years trapped in a tiny cage. When rescuers arrived, they managed to strike a deal to take her, though her owner initially resisted, arguing that she was valuable for breeding. But one glance at her frail frame—her ribs clearly visible and her legs numb from prolonged confinement—revealed she was in no condition to bear puppies. After an hour-long journey to the veterinarian, the dog spotted food and eagerly rushed toward it, clearly starving after so much neglect.

The thought of what she had endured, locked away and nearly forgotten, was heartbreaking. Her stomach rumbled from discomfort. A rescuer stayed close by, offering her comfort while she ate. Her body didn’t tolerate the food initially, but she managed to hold it down with some time and smaller portions.

Her tail and ears were gone, likely removed, which filled everyone with anger and sadness. Her weary eyes spoke volumes, full of exhaustion and despair. At the vet’s office, they discovered she was suffering from a urinary infection and a tumor. Her muscle mass was also alarmingly low from being confined for so long.

Two weeks later, the dog showed signs of improvement. Now named Puna, the dog had gained over 4 pounds, and her spirits lifted considerably. She adored meeting visitors, something she had never experienced before. All she had ever wanted was to feel loved.

The rescuers reported her situation to the authorities, who questioned her former owner, especially about her missing tail and ears. The owner shockingly admitted he didn’t want to deal with cleaning the cage, blaming her tail for making a mess. It was difficult to comprehend such a callous reason for her suffering.

Three weeks into Puna’s rescue, she returned to the shelter from her foster home with a prescription for medication. She remained on antibiotics, and a biopsy confirmed that her tumor was benign, which elated her new human friends. Though she required ongoing monitoring, Puna began to explore freely, experiencing the joy of moving around and meeting people who showered her with affection.

To everyone’s astonishment, Puna had spent nine years confined, forced to bear numerous litters, while her owner only sought profit. Weeks later, another follow-up confirmed her tumor remained benign, but surgery would be necessary. After she healed, she would soon be able to go to her new home.

Shortly after being released, he became overcome by rage and frustration and began violently wailing on his poor, trembling, frightened dog. It's clear that this man's violent tendencies didn't decrease after serving his time.

Puna’s resilience is awe-inspiring. Her former owner will now face consequences for his inexcusable actions. After three months of care, she has regained her strength. From a life filled with sorrow, Puna’s world has transformed into one of hope.
