Alex had been with his mom since he was just a tiny baby, and there was never any question about how she felt about him. She loved the little puppy, and by all accounts, Alex loved her right back. Then life changed in a way no one could have planned for. Alex’s mom was diagnosed with cancer, and as a single mother raising a 6-year-old daughter, she suddenly found herself facing health and financial challenges that made caring for her puppy increasingly difficult.
Eventually, she made an incredibly hard decision. She surrendered Alex so he could have the care and future she wanted for him.
Alex Arrived With Plenty of Love to Give
When 4-month-old Alex reached Adore-a-Bullie Paws and Claws in New York, rescuers didn’t exactly struggle to find nice things to say about him. In fact, they introduced the little Snorkie, a Schnauzer-Yorkie mix, as the “cutest puppy ever.”
Alex quickly started making a pretty strong case for the title. Rescuers described him as sweet, lovable, smart, great in the car, and happiest when he could curl up on someone’s lap.
He also had an adorable habit of following people wherever they went with his tail wagging behind him. Apparently, once Alex decides you’re one of his people, personal space becomes more of a suggestion.
His Mom Had Already Taught Him So Much
Although Alex suddenly found himself in unfamiliar surroundings, he came to the rescue with a pretty impressive puppy résumé. He was comfortable being quiet in his crate and had already learned to use puppy pads.
Once he was ready, his caregivers began helping him learn to potty outside, too. For a puppy only a few months old, Alex seemed determined to prove that his good looks were not his only talent.
The rescue also ensured Alex received the veterinary care he needed before he began his search for another family. He received an exam, vaccinations, deworming, and flea and tick treatment, while his ears were cleaned and treated as well.
Alex was also neutered and microchipped. With his medical checklist handled, there was really only one major item left on his to-do list: find someone willing to provide a lap.
Giving Up a Pet Doesn’t Always Mean Giving Up on Them
Surrender stories can be easy to misunderstand from the outside, but sometimes letting an animal go is an act of love in itself. Illness, housing changes, financial hardship and other unexpected crises can leave devoted pet families facing choices they never imagined having to make.
Alex’s story is an especially poignant reminder of that reality. His mom was navigating a cancer diagnosis while raising her young daughter, and the rescue made it clear that Alex had been deeply loved before circumstances forced their separation.
Nothing about Alex suggested he had grown up without affection, either. This was a puppy who wanted to follow people, sit in laps and hand out enthusiastic tail wags wherever he went. His first home had taught him what it meant to be loved. Now his rescuers needed to find someone who could keep that going.
It Didn’t Take Long for Someone to Fall for Him
When Adore-a-Bullie shared Alex’s story, the rescue suspected its tiny new arrival wouldn’t be waiting around for long. Between the wagging tail, lap-dog tendencies and face that inspired multiple declarations of “cutest puppy ever,” he had quite a few things working in his favor.
The applications came in, and soon the rescue had the update everyone hoped to see. Alex had officially been adopted. His new mom, Rachel, and her family were chosen to give the little pup his next home. The rescue wished the family “happy tails” as Alex headed off to begin the next part of his life.
Alex Gets to Keep Being Someone’s Baby
Alex’s story began with a goodbye that his first mom almost certainly never expected she’d have to make. But because she made sure he reached people who could care for him, that goodbye wasn’t the end of his story.
At only 4 months old, Alex has already been deeply loved by one family, cared for by an entire rescue team, and welcomed into another. That’s quite a lot for one very small, very cute, lap-obsessed puppy.
Now there are car rides to take, laps to occupy, and a new family to follow from room to room with that wagging tail. And somewhere in all of it is the outcome his first mom wanted when she made such a difficult choice: Alex is safe, cared for, and loved.
