A Good Samaritan was driving back to St. Louis from the Lake of the Ozarks when she spotted the small puppy sitting by the roadside. Instead of assuming someone else would help, she pulled over and carefully approached him. Thankfully, Hemi was gentle enough to let her bring him into the safety of her car, giving him the second chance he so desperately needed.
When Hemi arrived at Stray Rescue, the team quickly discovered he was suffering from demodectic mange, commonly called demodex mange. Fortunately, this form of mange is not contagious, making it much easier to focus on helping him heal. His inflamed skin was itchy and painful, and his tiny body showed clear signs that he had been struggling for some time.
The rescue staff immediately began his treatment with medicated baths designed to soothe the irritated skin and help him recover. Although the first few days were expected to be the hardest, everyone remained hopeful that relief was finally on the way. With proper medical care, nutritious meals, and a safe place to rest, Hemi could finally begin feeling like the playful puppy he was always meant to be.
What Is Demodectic Mange?
Demodectic mange, often called demodex mange or red mange, is a skin condition caused by microscopic Demodex mites that naturally live in a dog’s hair follicles. Most healthy dogs carry these mites without any problems, but puppies or dogs with weakened immune systems can develop an overgrowth that leads to hair loss, red skin, scabbing, and intense irritation.
Unlike sarcoptic mange, which is highly contagious, demodectic mange generally cannot be passed from dog to dog. Many young puppies recover completely with veterinary treatment, which may include medicated baths, prescription medications, and careful monitoring as their immune systems mature.

Over the following weekend, Hemi was surrounded by kindness instead of loneliness. Staff members showered him with affection, making sure he never felt forgotten again. Everyone who met him quickly fell in love with his sweet personality and gentle spirit.
