Bean may have only wanted a little adventure, but her unsupervised trip around a New Jersey neighborhood soon landed her in an unexpected place: the local police station. The tiny Pug had slipped away from her owners and was wandering around Cape May without anyone by her side. Fortunately, officers from the Cape May Police Department found the curious runaway before her adventure could lead her into trouble. What happened next transformed an ordinary lost dog call into a funny community story with a very happy ending.
An officer picked Bean up and brought her safely back to the station, according to Cape May Police Chief Anthony Marino. With no identification immediately connecting the little Pug to her family, police needed a way to spread the word that she had been found. That was when someone at the department came up with an idea perfectly suited to their mischievous little guest.
A ‘Pugshot’ With a Purpose
Police posed Bean for her very own mugshot, or more appropriately, a “pugshot.” Sitting behind the bars, Bean appeared surprisingly convincing as a tiny fugitive whose neighborhood adventure had finally caught up with her.
The playful photograph was more than an opportunity to make people smile. Officers hoped that sharing Bean’s face on social media would help the right person recognize her and connect them with her worried family.
“We wanted to find the owner, because at that point we had no idea who the owner was,” Marino told The Dodo.
The department posted Bean’s photo on Facebook along with a humorous warning about what happens when dogs run away from home. The image quickly attracted attention, earning thousands of likes and shares as people enjoyed the sight of the adorable Pug sitting in temporary police custody.
Behind the humor, however, was an important goal. Bean was safe, but she was still separated from the people who loved her. Every share increased the possibility that someone would recognize her. Eventually, that is exactly what happened.
Someone who saw the Facebook post knew Bean’s owner and contacted them. The department was then able to reunite the runaway Pug with her family, bringing her unexpected encounter with law enforcement to a happy conclusion.
Marino explained that social media can be an effective tool for reaching large numbers of people and gathering useful information. In Bean’s case, a funny photograph accomplished something much more meaningful than simply entertaining the community. It helped a lost dog find her way home.
Bean’s brief life on the run was finally over. Instead of spending another uncertain night away from everything familiar, she was soon back where she belonged, resting comfortably with her family.
Whether Bean actually learned anything from her brush with the law is another question. But thanks to a caring police department, an unforgettable “pugshot,” and a community willing to share her story, this little fugitive’s biggest adventure ended with exactly what every lost pet deserves: a safe journey home.
