Want to know how common your dog’s name is?

This interactive bubble chart shows the name of every dog registered in New York City by frequency of occurrence. The more common names like Bella and Max are larger circles, and names that are only registered once (like Popcorn-Minto-Jack and Playdoh) are tiny, barely visible specks.

Take a look at NYC.gov! It’s incredible what people think to name their pets!

It’s easy to get sucked down the rabbit hole, looking up names and playing with the chart! After only a few minutes I found that:

  • There are many dogs named Harry, but only a few Rons and no Hermoines.
  • There are 210 Angels, and just 5 Demons.
  • If you’re craving breakfast, you’ll find 20 Bacons, 7 Pancakes, 7 Toasts, but only 1 Egg!
  • There are exactly 3 dogs named Beetlejuice (don’t call them one at a time!)

Those who were extra-careful to try and choose a unique name may be pleased to see that their dog’s name doesn’t come up – or disappointed to see that it’s well represented.
