While students crossed the stage to receive the degrees they had worked years to earn, a service dog named Sadie received a touching surprise of her own beside her owner, Makaela Muse. The heartfelt moment instantly captured the audience’s attention and reminded everyone watching that behind many personal victories are companions who provide unwavering love, strength, and support through life’s most difficult challenges.
During the graduation ceremony at United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, Texas, graduate Makaela Muse proudly walked across the stage to receive her diploma. By her side was Sadie, the service dog who had supported her through years of challenges, long days, and hard-earned victories.
In a touching moment shared by Texas Tech University on Instagram, Muse shook hands with university president Lawrence Schovanec before he bent down to recognize Sadie, too. Tied with a bright red ribbon was a special “dogploma” treat, a rawhide bone presented just for the loyal service dog.
The crowd immediately erupted into cheers and applause as Sadie calmly accepted her gift. Tail steady and focused on her owner, the German shepherd walked off the stage beside Muse as if she fully understood how meaningful the moment truly was.
Muse later admitted she was overwhelmed with emotion.
“I was just speechless,” she shared in an interview with the university. “That just made the moment so much more special. I will never forget that.”
For Muse, the recognition meant far more than a funny graduation surprise. It honored the bond she and Sadie built while navigating difficult health challenges together.
According to Texas Tech, Muse was diagnosed several years ago with rare genetic conditions that required constant monitoring. The health struggles could have easily made pursuing a college degree feel impossible at times. But Sadie became a constant source of comfort, stability, and support throughout the journey.
Originally a beloved family pet, Sadie was later task-trained to assist Muse in school and daily life. From attending classes to helping monitor her condition, the loyal dog remained faithfully by her side through every obstacle and milestone.
A Graduation Moment Nobody Will Forget
What made the moment especially powerful was how naturally Sadie carried herself throughout the ceremony. While the crowd cheered loudly around her, she remained calm and attentive, focused entirely on Muse.

Schovanec later reflected on the emotional moment in a public statement.

Now holding a Bachelor of Science degree in animal science, Muse hopes to become a large animal veterinarian. And through every new chapter ahead, there is little doubt Sadie will continue to be right beside her.
