A grant from Greater Good Charities supported St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center disaster relief efforts in a tremendous way as they coordinated the transport and intake of over 420 dogs, cats and bunnies in response to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.
In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, St. Hubert’s mobilized its Sister Shelter WayStation transport program to welcome shelter dogs from Texas to New Jersey.
The first air transport arrived in Morristown Municipal Airport and was the first animal flight to the Northeast from the area devastated by Hurricane Harvey. In the days before Hurricane Irma hit Florida, St. Hubert’s welcomed two ground transports of shelter dogs, cats and bunnies from South Carolina Shelters and an airlift of shelter dogs and cats from Tampa Bay. These animals arrived at St. Hubert’s Madison shelter facility for intake and initial exams.
St. Hubert’s was then able to utilize partnerships with shelters who participate in the WayStation Transport Program and coordinate rides of animals up to North East partners via their Zephyr and Griffin transport vehicles. This grant allowed them to send 36 hurricane dogs along with the regularly scheduled WayStation transports into New England, all of whom they were able to medically prep according to state importation laws. This grant allowed St. Hubert’s to get these dogs ready for transport and deliver them safely to their destination shelter with skilled staff leading the helm.
Jerry, who arrived from a hurricane-stricken area, was cared for and transported to one of St. Hubert’s partner shelters as a result of the grant.
“This generous grant allowed St. Hubert’s to answer the call when so many animals were in need. Support from GreatGood.org has helped not only the animals displaced by the hurricanes but also those animals St. Hubert’s helps on a regular basis. This gift enabled us to continue our already scheduled local and distance rescue work on top of helping those affected by the hurricanes.” – St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center
