This dog did not choose to live on the streets; she was forced into it when she was abandoned. As she realized she was about to give birth, there was no time to seek shelter. She was on the brink of exhaustion and had to summon all her strength to deliver her puppies on the streets. The mother dog had no strength left. Her collar indicated that she had been abandoned, likely because she was pregnant. Without proper food, water, or shelter, she wandered the streets looking for a safe place to give birth. But reality often differs from plans. She was caught off guard by labor and had to deliver right there on the street, on a piece of cardboard. She gave birth to six puppies, but tragically, two were stillborn.
Despite her overwhelming fatigue, when she saw people approaching, she mustered the last bit of her energy to stand up and defend her newborns. Unaware that the approaching people were there to help, she reacted aggressively, trying her best to protect her puppies. It took three attempts for the rescue team to safely capture her and her babies and take them to a secure location.
At the shelter, it was a relief to see that the mother had enough milk for her puppies. Now, it was her turn to be fed a nutritious meal. She was starving and devoured about 5 pounds of liver in her first two meals, demonstrating her dire hunger. The first 48 hours were critical, but the puppies thrived, began to open their eyes, and enjoyed their early days.
The mother was also recovering, although she remained wary of people, which was understandable. In time, her rescuers hope she will learn to trust humans again. Thanks to the compassion of the rescuers, this mother and her puppies were saved from a grim fate.
