Amid the bustling streets of Chicago, a dog named Sprout was enduring an unimaginable struggle. Her thick coat of matted fur grew so heavy and dense that it nearly immobilized her, acting like a weight she could never escape. The large brown dog, once vibrant and free, had become hidden beneath layers of neglect, her fur dragging behind her like a burden she couldn’t shed. Sprout’s fortune changed when Chicago Animal Care and Control found her wandering alone. Recognizing her dire condition, they immediately reached out to One Tail at a Time for assistance.

“Sprout was in a horrific state when she was found as a stray. It was difficult to tell what breed she was, but we suspected that she was a mastiff,” shared Alli Rooney, marketing manager for the rescue group, with The Dodo.

When Sprout arrived at the rescue, she seemed overwhelmed and wary of her new environment. The veterinary team quickly stepped in to help, sedating her to begin the extensive grooming process. They worked tirelessly for hours, finally removing 32.4 pounds of matted fur. For the first time in months, Sprout could lift her head with ease, free from the oppressive weight she had carried for so long.

Now, Sprout is receiving care for a skin infection, but her overall health is surprisingly stable. Despite her rough journey, her spirit remains intact. “Although timid, she is trusting of her foster mom and has a sweet temperament,” Rooney noted. “Since her grooming, she has been coming out of her shell more and more each day. She has started to trot in the yard and beg for pets, which is really cute!”

Sprout’s Before and After is INCREDIBLE!

In her foster home, Sprout is finally experiencing the comfort and love she deserves. Her caretakers are ensuring she has everything she needs to heal physically and emotionally. “She is currently in a very loving foster home that makes sure she is as comfortable as possible,” Rooney explained. “She’s had several applications come in, and we know she will find an amazing home. One Tail will make sure that Sprout is spoiled for the rest of her life.”

Shortly after being released, he became overcome by rage and frustration and began violently wailing on his poor, trembling, frightened dog. It's clear that this man's violent tendencies didn't decrease after serving his time.

With time, Sprout’s skin will heal, and her coat will grow back vibrant and healthy. Most importantly, she’s on the path to finding a family who will cherish her endlessly. Her future, once so uncertain, now shines bright with hope. Click ‘play’ below if you’d like to experience Sprout’s amazing transformation.
