Do you like more traditional dog names or do you tend to choose something more unique? Apparently, most dog owners these days try to come with a name that’s a little different from the rest, only to find that thousands of others came up with the same thing.  I probably put as much thought into a name for my dog as I have for my own children. I’ve also adopted dogs who were in need of a home that already had a name that wasn’t all that original such as Jack and Daisy; but for them, their name seemed to fit just right.

This year, the most popular name for a female dog is Bella, which means either they were going for the Italian version of beautiful, or they may have been fans of the popular “Twilight” book and film series.  For males dogs, the popular name was Max.  That’s almost like the name “Rover,” which was extremely overdone. Coincidentally, the survey, which was conducted by Rover.com, showed that the name “Rover” is not in the Top 100 list of popular names.

Other traditional names that were among the Top 10 included Buddy, Jack and Charlie. Cooper came in at number five and would arguably be considered a little more unique. Most of the names follow the trend of owners seeing themselves more as a “pet parent” rather than an owner, naming their “babies” similar to what they would name a newborn child. Other than Bella, the top five female dog names were Lucy, Bailey, Daisy and Lily. The name “Daisy” has made a bit of a comeback when it comes to naming bouncing baby girls, as well.

The survey found that as many as 14 percent of the names were completely unique with no other dogs, at least in their data base. A unique name, such as “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” would be difficult to duplicate.

Despite the fact that the list of dog names is quite similar to the list of popular baby names, only one of the leading dog names, such as “Chloe,” overlaps with the BabyCenter.com’s list that was released for 2013. The name Sophie was close. It came in at number 9 on the popular dog name list. The name Sophia has been the number one girls’ name on BabyCenter.com’s list for four consecutive years.

The Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. released their own survey earlier this year to announce the “wackiest” names for pets. The top dog was “Sir Knuckles da Dragon,” while the top wacky cat name went to “Cheeto Burrito.”

I think “Cheeto Burrito” might be a great name for a Chihuahua! What do you think? Is your dog’s name on the list?
