The Staircase To A Hilltop Shelter Was Washing Away, Until One Charity Stepped In

Rescue Rebuild headed to the home of country music and the Grand Ole Opry: Nashville, Tennessee!

The Nashville Humane Association had been struggling with water issues and erosion for years. And not just a little bit of water – full-on flooding!

The property sits in the middle of a large hill, and all the water from the streets above was washing their property away. The stairs they use to get to their play yard and walking trails were collapsing, and several staff and volunteers had fallen. Fixing their 65ft staircase and all these water issues seemed like a daunting task, but luckily, Rescue Rebuild is up for any challenge!

As the adage states, “water runs downhill,” so they made the hike to the top of the hill and got started. After adding a drainage culvert to the top of the property, a 275ft berm and swale system was then designed to divert water into French drains and basins, and they were back in business.

The next obstacle to tackle was the eroded staircase leading up to the walking trail. Remember as a child walking up a slide instead of taking the stairs? That’s what this was like, and the staff and dogs had to do this multiple times a day. After many long hours in 90+ degree heat, they were able to dig out what was left of the old staircase and install the new, much safer, staircase and bridge.

That concluded a fast and furious four-day build. So much work crammed into such a short time frame would not have been possible without the support of Mars PetCare and their amazing employees!

Heat and constant rain tried to slow down progress, but nothing deterred these dedicated volunteers. Nashville Humane Association now has a usable dog walking trail and a safe staircase for the volunteers and dogs to use. Extended amounts of rain and washout is no longer an issue! So many happy dogs and humans!
