All shelter and stray dogs harbor dreams of the day they’ll join a forever family—a moment that stands as the pinnacle of their existence. Dogs are not equipped to live on the streets, fending for themselves. That is why it is imperative to give homeless dogs a loving home. Twinkle, a charming senior Chihuahua, shared this aspiration. However, instead of basking in the affection she rightly deserved, she encountered profound disappointment. Discovered wandering the streets of Miami, Florida, in June 2022, Twinkle was taken in by True and Faithful Pet Rescue Mission, an organization dedicated to rescuing senior and unwanted dogs from high-kill shelters.
Upon arrival, she was underweight, suffering from severe dental problems and a dreadful skin infection. She was nearly bald. Moreover, she required surgery to excise her mammary tumors. Fortunately, her surgical procedure was a success, and after several weeks, Twinkle not only recuperated fully but also gained weight, ready to embark on a new chapter in her life.
In September 2022, the rescue announced that Twinkle had found a new home. Her adoptive parents appeared wonderful, and the shelter staff believed she would finally be showered with the love she deserved. Yet, four months later, these very parents relinquished her back to the shelter because Twinkle sought to sleep in their bed—a privilege not extended to their other senior Chihuahuas.
During the heart-wrenching moment of her surrender, her parents simply handed her over the fence and departed. Twinkle watched them disappear, her heart shattering. Twinkle was impeccably well-mannered; all she yearned for was affection and cuddles, which, tragically, her previous owners failed to provide.
The rescue staff was distraught upon learning of Twinkle’s fate, puzzled by the ease with which someone could forsake such a loving animal. Madison Mulvihill, social media coordinator at True and Faithful Pet Rescue, told The Dodo, “Twinkle isn’t just cute; she possesses a tremendous personality, even at just 3-and-a-half pounds. She’s not shy about seeking attention and exudes happiness, displaying delightful little hops as she scampers across the grass at our ranch.”
Determined to aid Twinkle, her friends created a TikTok video to share her story (which is posted below), hoping it would secure her a permanent home. The video captured the hearts of millions, and the rescue was inundated with requests to adopt her. Eventually, her new parents traveled from South Carolina to welcome her into their lives.
They are wonderful, and Twinkle now enjoys the company of six furry siblings and a king-size bed where she can sleep as often as she desires. At last, Twinkle has found a family capable of offering her the boundless love she deserves and showing her the essence of true love.
