Volunteers Work Tirelessly To Improve A Shelter For Homeless Pets

| July 6, 2017

Part of each sale through the iHeartDogs store is donated to Greater Good, which helps support various charities like Rescue Rebuild. Thanks to customers like you, happy endings, like the one below, are made possible.

Flint Humane Society, located in Vienna, Georgia, had the same issues that most rural shelters have—limited space and resources. In particular, they had no safe, warm place for puppies.

Once they reached out to Rescue Rebuild, the organization immediately knew that this build was right up their alley. With fifteen volunteers who travelled an accumulated 3,700 miles, they were onsite to help this very appreciative shelter.

The first chore on this 14-day build was to clean out a huge garage that had become a junk-storage room and get it ready to become the new puppy haven. Kennels had to be built, floors had to be sanitized and sealed, a new puppy wash station was installed, heating and air-conditioning was installed, and the whole building got a coat of paint before it was good enough for the pups.

Rescue Rebuild didn’t forget the big dogs, though. They got a new play yard! To make them more comfortable in the kennels, dog beds were built, the electric was repaired, waterlines were fixed, and the concrete floors were sealed – all in a very short amount of time. This group of volunteers was up to the task! Sun up to sun down, this crew was dedicated and energized to get the work done.

So much was accomplished in just two weeks. Over 550 feet of chain-link was installed and over 1,500 hours of painting were logged by the volunteers. Besides cleaning out the garage, all the concrete floors were etched and sealed, eight 10’x10’ kennels were built to be used as a puppy litter quarantine, 2 HVAC units were installed in the barn, the bathroom was renovated, and lighting repairs were made in the kennels.

Long hours and little sleep is always a possibility when you have volunteers willing to do everything they can to help our shelter animals, even if that means taking your work back to the hotel with you. When you see how much the doggies love their new arrangements, you forget just how tired you are!

Thanks to iHeartDogs customers like you, projects like this can be funded!
