Sweet Paws Rescue (SPR) in Essex, Massachusetts took in 28 Golden Retrievers liberated from “deplorable conditions”.
Animal Control in Millis, MA have long been suspicious of the woman’s breeding practices, but an official investigation was not launched until February when the suspect brought a dead dog to a local emergency veterinary clinic.
The breeder is facing four counts of felony animal cruelty in a separate case and “dozens of pending felony cruelty charges in this open and ongoing case,” according to Sweet Paws Rescue’s Facebook page.
The 28 Goldens – mostly adults plus one litter of puppies – were welcomed by SPR volunteers on Monday. At this time they are not available for adoption, and the group is not accepting further applications.
While they may appear healthy in their photos, SPR states they are suffering from “a host of medical issues.”
SPR will focus on socializing the dogs and addressing their ear infections, parasites, heart murmurs, eye afflictions, matted hair coats, and wounds of unknown origin.”
The dogs must also be vaccinated, spayed and neutered, and put through behavioral evaluations before they can be re-homed.
Since the case is ongoing, authorities and members of Sweet Paws Rescue are not at liberty to provide more details. However, SPR states there will be a press release with more details when the case reaches its conclusion.
As of now, the breeder remains free on $100 bail. She is due back in court on May 21.
