Bully sticks are becoming more and more popular among dog owners, especially as a safer alternative to rawhide. Although some owners are put off by bully sticks because of what they are – beef penis (or pizzle, as manufacturers like to call it). It might sound disgusting, but consider that dogs are adapted to eat all parts of animals, the same way wolves do in the wild.

When we use animals for their meat, only certain parts are used for human consumption. Instead of the rest of the animal being wasted, the less desirable parts are often used in pet foods. In this case, beef pizzle is put to great use. There are several reasons your dog should try them, including these:

#1 – They’re Delicious

Most dogs absolutely love bully sticks. They seem to be drawn by the smell of the treats and enjoy the taste. Depending on the type and size of bully stick and the size and chewing style of your pup, they can offer up to a few hours of entertainment. They are considered long-lasting chews that provide mental stimulation for dogs and are often used by owners during times they are busy or when the dogs need to be crated.

#2 – They Promote Dental Health

Bully sticks are an excellent choice when it comes to promoting dental health in our dogs. Although they don’t replace brushing teeth and a professional dental cleaning by a veterinarian, they do provide some major benefits. The chewing and gnawing your dog does to work through the bully stick scrapes nasty plaque and tartar off of your dog’s teeth. Bully sticks are an easy way to offer at-home dental cleaning for the dog that hates getting their teeth brushed or wiped.

#3 – They’re Nutritious

Bully sticks are a very nutritious treat. Unlike rawhide, they are 100% digestible. This means that your dog will be able to fully digest the entire bully stick without risk of undigested pieces forming a blockage in your dog’s intestinal tract. Bully sticks are also all-natural, single ingredient treats, which means there aren’t any dangerous additives you need to worry about. They are also high in protein and low in fat, making them an excellent choice for dogs that need to lose weight. Beef is also an excellent source of amino acids, magnesium and calcium to promote your dog’s skin, coat, muscle and brain health; which means that bully sticks provide these nutrients as well.
