3 Signs Your Chihuahua Needs More Exercise

| October 29, 2016

Just because your Chihuahua is a small dog it doesn’t mean that he doesn’t need exercise. In fact, Chihuahuas can be quite energetic – I know a dog trainer who has a MACH agility title on a Chihuahua! While your Chihuahua may not need that much exercise, it’s good to keep in mind that staying active will keep him healthier and can even help curb some behavioral issues. The following are 3 signs your Chihuahua needs more exercise.

#1 – Destructive Behavior

Though tiny, Chihuahuas are easily capable of making a mess if they have too much pent-up energy. If yours is chewing on your shoes or unraveling your toilet paper, she probably needs more exercise. Training will also help.

#2 – Nuisance Barking

Most Chihuahuas like to bark. Some are reactive barkers, and that’s a whole different story. But if your normally quiet Chihuahua has suddenly taken to barking at every little noise, it could be that she has too much energy and thinks barking is a good way to expend it.

#3 – Overweight

Chihuahuas are prone to obesity, which causes all sorts of health issues. If your Chihuahua has lost all definition and you can no longer see his waist, it’s time to up the exercise. Be sure to talk to your vet about diet and any medical issues that might be causing the weight gain as well.
