One quiet morning, Scott Lockard arrived at the Oklahoma Humane Society’s adoption center, ready to start the day. As he approached the front door, something unusual caught his attention — a black bag tied to the handle. Intrigued, he moved closer, and his heart sank when he discovered a small brown dog inside the bag. Scott, a seasoned animal advocate, had encountered similar situations before. While saddened, he knew exactly what needed to be done.

“This wasn’t the first time I’ve arrived to find animals waiting at the door,” Scott shared with The Dodo. “I wasn’t super surprised, but I was focused on getting her comfortable, fed, and watered.”

Once inside, the little dog was carefully removed from the bag. She appeared nervous but healthy, with a sweet and gentle demeanor that tugged at Scott’s heart. As he made her comfortable, he discovered a damp piece of paper tucked inside the carrier. The note provided a small glimpse into the dog’s story, reading, “Her name is Maris, find her a good home.”

The Oklahoma Humane Society later shared Maris’ photo on social media. However, the intention wasn’t to criticize those who had abandoned her. Instead, the post aimed to raise awareness about the growing issue of homeless animals in the community and the urgent need for foster families.

A children's doctor had been evicted and had left items behind when she left. Among them was something alarming: a plastic storage bin, where a dog had been locked inside. If someone is this cruel to a small, defenseless dog, how can they continue to treat children as a doctor?

“We didn’t post the photo to specifically call out the people who left the pet,” explained Roshelle Anderson, the humane society’s marketing manager. “We wanted to shed light on a larger problem facing our community.”

For now, Maris is under the care of the Humane Society as she waits for a foster family to step forward. Her journey is far from over, but her rescuers are hopeful that this sweet pup will soon find her forever home — a place where she can finally feel safe and loved. With her past behind her, Maris is one step closer to discovering where she truly belongs.
