#1 – Appenzeller Sennenhund
The Appenzeller Sennenhund is one of four Sennenhunds, meaning Swiss Mountain Dogs. It’s a medium-sized dog from the Swiss Alps and was bred and used as a cattle herder and livestock guardian. They are powerful dogs that bond closely with and seek the attention of their owners.
#2 – Bernese Mountain Dog
The Bernese Mountain Dog, also called the Berner Sennenhund, is a large dog from the Swiss Alps used mostly as a general purpose farm dog. Because of their size and power, they were also used as draft dogs. They are very social dogs that enjoy the attention of humans and make excellent family companions.
#3 – Entlebucher Mountain Dog
Also called the Entlebucher Sennehund, the Entlebucher Mountain Dog is the smallest of dogs from the Swiss Alps. Like the others, it was originally used for herding and guarding. They are very active working dogs that make excellent family companions.
#4 – Greater Swiss Mountain Dog
The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is a very large, powerful dog from the Swiss Alps. Because of their size and power, they excelled at general purpose farm work such as cart pulling and guarding. They are very social around adults and children and make wonderful family companions.
#5 – Saint Bernard
The Saint Bernard is a large breed of dog from the Swiss Alps and Italy. Because of its size and heavy coat, it was used as a rescue dog in the harsh mountain climate. Although the breed is no longer used for rescues, it does well in a variety of dog sports such as weight pulling and carting. They are very docile with sweet temperaments and do well around children and adults.
