When it comes to winter weather, most people really want to go by as quickly and painlessly as possible. But not these dogs. Nope, these breeds were made for the snow and ice and they can’t wait until it’s time for the fluffy white stuff to fall. So if you live in a cold climate and are looking for a pooch that loves a good snow day, check out these breeds!
#1 – Alaskan Malamute
This large, powerful breed was originally used for pulling sleds across the icy Alaskan tundra. In fact, these dogs are still used for this purpose today. There’s no doubt it’s cold during the long winter months, so Alaskan Malamutes have very thick, dense coats to protect them from the harsh climate. They are are very social dogs and require a significant amount of exercise should they not be used for any specific job.
#2 – Siberian Husky
The Siberian Husky is another sled dog, developed in the freezing cold of Siberia. Like the Malamute, they have very dense coats to help keep them warm in the sub-zero temperatures. Russian winters are renowned for being extremely harsh and dangerous, but these dogs are ready to run through. Huskies are very active dogs that need a job to do and have a tendency to make poor companions for those not ready or willing to provided the needed exercise.
#3 – Tibetan Terrier
If you’re looking for a medium- to small-sized dog, look no further than the Tibetan Terrier. Originating in Tibet, these shaggy dogs were bred to live outdoors in the snow. They were kept as companions, watch dogs and even herding dogs, although today they are mostly loving friends and family members to their humans. They are happy, social and affectionate dogs that are generally well-behaved with children of all ages.
#4 – Norwegian Elkhound
Coming from the cold winters of Norway, the Norwegian Elkhound is a hunting dog originally bred for hunting moose (or elk), bear and even wolves. Their thick coats provide protection against the harsh winter climates and their powerful bodies offer excellent endurance. These dogs are very intelligent and loyal, forming strong bonds with their humans.
#5 – Samoyed
The Samoyed is the herding dog of Russia and Siberia. Used as a reindeer herder and draft dog, this breed is large, powerful but very friendly and even boisterous. Their beautiful white coats make them easily recognizable and they are known for being as playful and affectionate as they are attractive. This breed is so social its enthusiasts have coined the term “Sammie smile,” to describe the dog’s gentle expression.
#6 – St. Bernard
The St. Bernard is a very large, powerful dog from the cold western Alps. A gentle giant, it’s temperament and ability to thrive in cold weather comes from its work as an alpine rescue dog, saving people and recovering casualties from avalanches. They were also used as livestock guardians, herders and even watchdogs. Today, they are still used in search and rescue although not as much as they once were.
