On April 7th, 2015, Animal Rescue Corps was shutting down a puppy mill in Kankakee, Illinois. 80 dogs in total were taken from the mill, and local rescues were called in to help.

ALIVE Rescue was one of these, and they took six of the mill survivors: Abbi, Ilana, Wayne, Barbara, Sparkle, and Millie.

According to ALIVE rescue, “These poor pups were forced to live on elevated wire crates without bottoms for years. They were over bred and did not receive the vet care and love they deserve. They have severe dental disease, loose teeth, severely overgrown nails, and feet covered in urine stains. Many have never even known life outside of a crate. They have never felt the sun or smelled fresh air.”

BUT THAT’S ALL CHANGED

Watch the below video as all six “Operation Spring Break” dogs experience freedom for the first time. Be sure to have tissues handy!

A Special Delivery

Barabara, in the video above, came from the mill pregnant.  On May 2, she went into labor but it was clear something was wrong.

According to Dyana Flanigan from ALIVE Rescue, “She became extremely pale and was rushed to the ER to be monitored.  [In the morning on May 5] Barbara and one of the puppies were showing signs of stress and we were told Barbara must go in for an emergency c-section if she and the puppies have any chance of survival.”

All five are doing fine now but the cost to save them was around $4,000. They are asking that anyone who can, donate to “Barbara’s Fund.”
