| July 24, 2015

Three weeks after rescuing 300 severely neglected animals from the Lawrence County Animal Shelter in Moulton, Alabama, many of them are now ready to be adopted.

Luckily, some of them found their original owners and the ASPCA was able to reunite the families.

“ASPCA responders have managed the sheltering, medical treatment and behavior enrichment of these animals removed from the overcrowded and unsanitary conditions at Lawrence County Animal Shelter for the past several weeks,” said Tim Rickey, vice president of the ASPCA’s Field Investigations and Response team. “Pet owners have had a chance to visit our temporary shelter to look for their lost pets, and we have reunited several animals with their owners. Now our top priority is to help all the remaining animals find good homes. We are hoping that not only the local community, but those as far as Birmingham and Nashville will come to the event and open their home to one of these many deserving animals.”

However, those without families are now in need of a home and there are dozens of them. To aid in this endeavor, the ASPCA is holding an Adoption Event this Weekend at the temporary shelter in Moulton, Alabama.

Adoption Event Information

WHEN: Saturday & Sunday, July 25 and 26; 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

WHERE: 14934 Highway 20, Hillsboro, Ala. 35643.
Turn into the driveway at Hillsboro Gin & Feed Co., then proceed left and back toward Warehouse 2.

HOW: Potential adopters should bring with them one government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license, passport, military ID, or non-driver ID), proof of address, and a pet transfer crate, if possible.

All adoptions fees will be waived. The ASPCA will ensure that adoptable animals will be spayed/neutered, micro-chipped and vaccinated free of charge. Additionally, members of the ASPCA Anti-Cruelty Behavior and Veterinary teams will be on-site to help answer questions about animals’ temperaments and medical histories in order to make the best possible match with potential adopters.

WHY: On June 30, the ASPCA assisted the Moulton Police Department in removing more than 300 animals from the Lawrence County Animal Shelter and transported them to a temporary shelter where they are receiving medical care and enrichment. ASPCA responders discovered the animals living in deplorable conditions and suffering from neglect and numerous medical issues. More than 150 responders from 13 agencies have provided round-the-clock care for these animals since the rescue on June 30.

“We have dogs all sizes, breeds and ages. Everyone who comes out will find something for them,” says Kelly Krause, spokesperson for the ASPCA.

The ASPCA is hoping people from all over the state and as far as Tennessee and Mississippi will come out to find a new best friend.

Here is a “sneak peak” at just a few of the dogs available for adoption this weekend:

Lucy (ID# ALA1000)
Lucy is a very friendly pit bull mix who was discovered by ASPCA responders with her litter of five puppies at the Lawrence County Animal Shelter. Unfortunately, the puppies didn’t survive as veterinary experts confirmed their cause of death to parvovirus, a highly contagious viral disease, which could have been prevented by vaccinations. Luckily, Lucy survived and she is now looking for a loving home.

Emma (ID# ALA1015)
Emma is a sassy senior who was discovered with skin infections and an ingrown collar. She was in so much pain from her collar wound that she would yelp as veterinary experts treated. Emma has since recovered from her medical issues, and she is now a jovial dog who loves to be in the company of others.

Ashley (ID# ALBH18)
Ashley is a sweet 12-week-old pointer mix who almost died of distemper, a contagious virus that affects a dog’s respiratory, gastrointestinal and central nervous systems. After receiving much-needed treatment and vaccines at the ASPCA’s medical unit, Ashley’s overall health improved and she has recently joined the other dogs at the temporary shelter. She is shy at first, but is looking for an individual or family to give her a good home.

Della (ID# ALBH21)
Della is a senior dog who is blind, but that doesn’t hold her back. She is a very sweet and fond of being petted and handled. The ASPCA is planning to take Della to a specialist to see if she will be able to regain some of her vision.
