An animal shelter in Alabama is searching for whoever left a dog tied up to the door outside their shelter in the middle of the night.

On the night of May 10, at around 9 p.m. local time, the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter was dark and quiet. That’s when two people in a car drove up in the parking lot and abandoned a dog there. If that wasn’t bad enough, the sweet mama dog was left in horrible condition with a metal chain embedded in her neck.

The dog had recently been pregnant, and it was also apparent that she had been underfed, given that her ribs were visible. The dog had clearly been suffering for a long time — and now the shelter is on a mission to find out who is responsible.

Do you recognize these individuals, vehicle, or dog (photo of the dog in the comments)?” the shelter posted on Facebook. “Our staff found this poor dog tied to our door this morning. Once we got her inside we discovered she had a severely embedded chain in her neck. This is not something that happens overnight. We’ve made a cruelty report with the Tuscaloosa Police Department. Please let them know if you have any information. We will be getting her medical treatment this morning.”

The shelter has seen a lot of severe cases lately, and this one is no exception. The poor dog needed to have the chain surgically removed from her neck because it had been there so long.

“We want to make sure people know that chains are not an appropriate method of restraint,” a shelter spokesperson told Fox 13 News. “They are very abrasive and unfortunately, we see this type of injury far too often. Her injury likely occurred over a period of time since the skin was beginning to grow over the chain.”

Because the dog needed to have surgery, the shelter is taking donations for her care. Anyone who wants to help can make a donation on the shelter’s Facebook page. As of May 24, the community had helped raise nearly $3,500 for the dog and other animals in need of veterinary care.

This dog has been through a lot — but with the shelter’s help, she will be back to normal in no time, and her true personality will start to shine.
