All pet parents know exactly how much our animals mean to us—so choosing to give up a dog that you adore is probably an absolutely heartbreaking experience.
But a 12 year-old-boy, who was painfully aware of the abuse his dog was suffering at home, acted out of true love and did everything he could to help his sweet pup find a happier life.
Despite loving him so much, and considering him his best friend, a young boy named Andrés was forced to make the devastating decision to rehome his dog, Rene.
Why? Because Rene was suffering at the hand of Andrés’ own father. Not only was Rene receiving regular beatings, but he was kicked so hard that his tail had sustained a serious injury.
So Andrés decided that it would be best for him to go behind his father’s back and leave Rene, along with a detailed note explaining why he was choosing to say goodbye, in a box outside of an animal rescue facility. There, Rene would be able to find a new family and live his best life.
Luckily, sweet Rene wasn’t waiting long in the box for the staff at Xollin Animal Refuge to find him. Though, Andrés did pack him his favorite stuffed toy to keep him company. Xollin is an animal rescue organization that helps find homes for animals who have suffered at the hands of humans.
“We take care of them and rehabilitate them physically and emotionally so that they can smile again, have confidence in human beings and thus be happier in a new home, through adoption, or in our centre through sponsorship,” said an employee.
Not only did Andrés put his favorite toy in the box with Rene, but he also included a heartbreaking, handwritten note that detailed why he was so willing to make this difficult decision. You may want to grab a tissue before you continue to read. This letter is a real tearjerker.
“My name is Andrés and I’m 12-years-old. My mom and I decided to leave him to you. All of this is behind my dad’s back, because he was thinking of selling him. But he is always beating and kicking the dog. Once he kicked him so hard that his little tail got injured. I hope you can help him and take care of him. Here is a plush toy so he won’t forget me.”
Sadly, not everyone sees animals as members of the family. But brave Andrés was willing to do what it took to get his best friend to safety, even if he knew he’d miss him forever.
