Sadly, dogs getting abandoned in freezing conditions isn’t a rare occurrence, but animal rescues do everything they can to give these pups better lives. In a recent situation, an extremely pregnant dog was found in a dog house that didn’t protect her from the winter elements. She looked like her puppies could pop out of her at any minute!

Luckily, rescuers found the lonely dog before she had to give birth all alone. They gave her a cozy place to relax and they comforted her during the birthing process. Now, the mom and her puppies are happier and healthier than ever!

Pregnant and Alone

Richmond Animal Care and Control (RACC) saved the pregnant dog from unlivable conditions. The dog, now called “Mama Manolo,” was left outside during freezing temperatures. She was inside a wooden dog house that was full of water. Thanks to Virginia’s laws, the rescue was able to seize the pregnant pooch from those horrific conditions.

In Virginia, it’s illegal to keep a dog outdoors without proper shelter if the temperature is above 85 degrees Fahrenheit, if it’s below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, or if there’s a severe weather warning in the area. “Adequate shelter” is described as a place that’s clean, dry, and safe from weather conditions.

The RACC gave Manolo proper shelter, but they knew she couldn’t stay there long-term. Since she could give birth at any time, they didn’t want her to be alone overnight. On December 23rd, they transferred her to Virginia Veterinary Centers so she could have 24/7 care.

As the shelter staff members brought Manolo to the vet, the dog was overjoyed to receive some love and attention. She is such a friendly and well-behaved dog despite the conditions she was found in.

Nine Beautiful Puppies!

Manolo gave birth to her puppies on Christmas day, only three days after her rescue. The organization had guessed that there were a lot of puppies in Manolo’s belly, and they were right! She gave birth to nine beautiful pups.

“She had NINE perfect puppies late on Christmas night and ended early this morning! 7 girls and 2 boys! We are grateful to our Officers for saving Manolo from the freezing temps and that these pups arrived in a warm and safe environment with our skilled team at VVC,” the RACC wrote on Facebook.

Mama Manolo and her puppies aren’t up for adoption yet, but they will be when the time is right. The RACC plans to prepare them for adoption in about eight weeks when the puppies are done nursing and are more independent. Many Facebook followers have already expressed interest in adopting these wonderful dogs, so they’ll have forever homes in no time!
