When No One Else Came Back for These Abandoned Puppies, a Cat Rescue Did.

For Billie and Finneas, everything familiar vanished when the people they depended on packed up and left them behind. Even without the usual resources or space to take in dogs, rescuers stepped forward and brought the puppies to safety.

A Cat Rescue Couldn’t Turn Away Two Puppies

Helping dogs isn’t normally what Cats of San Bernardino does. The organization primarily focuses its time, resources, and rescue efforts on cats in need throughout the community, which meant taking responsibility for two abandoned puppies presented an entirely different challenge.

But Billie and Finneas didn’t know they had been discovered by a cat rescue. They only knew they were hot, uncomfortable, covered in ticks, and suddenly alone. Faced with two vulnerable animals who urgently needed help, the rescue team decided that species didn’t matter nearly as much as getting them somewhere safe.

Taking them in meant finding veterinary care, raising money for their medical needs, and eventually searching for appropriate foster-to-adopt homes equipped for puppies. Supporters stepped up to help with those unexpected expenses, allowing an organization devoted to saving cats to make room in its mission for two very deserving dogs.

Billie and Finneas Begin to Heal

The siblings were taken to a veterinarian, where they could finally receive the medical attention, food, and comfort they desperately needed. Rescuers named them Billie and Finneas and began helping them recover from everything they had endured. Soon, there was encouraging news. Every tick was removed from their little bodies, offering relief from the constant discomfort they had been experiencing. Their appearance began improving too, and the frightened puppies slowly started showing more of their personalities.

Their behavior around food offered another glimpse into their difficult past. Billie and Finneas become incredibly excited whenever mealtime arrives, leading their rescuers to believe they had experienced food insecurity before being saved. Despite those painful experiences, neither puppy has allowed the past to define them. Billie and Finneas are playful, affectionate, and eager to give love. As they have begun feeling safer, their joyful puppy personalities have continued to emerge.

Their transformation is especially moving considering the condition in which they were found. Instead of being alone in a sweltering backyard, they now have full bellies, clean bodies, veterinary care, and people watching over them.

The next chapter will be finding each puppy a permanent family where that feeling of safety can continue. Cats of San Bernardino hopes to place Billie and Finneas with foster-to-adopt families, giving them the opportunity to finish healing in loving homes.
