A Dog Meat Farm Was Shut Down. Now 250 Dogs Are Looking For Forever Homes!

| May 1, 2016

When there are so many stories circulating about the horrors of the dog meat trade, rescues like these are a breath of fresh air. There are some incredible organizations saving thousands of lives from the fate of slaughter and working to end this horrific business.

The Humane Society International is working their tails off to save dogs from the meat trade, one farm at a time. Recently, they’ve saved about 250 canine lives.

This week, the Lancaster County SPCA in Pennsylvania received 120 of the pups who were rescued from a farm in South Korea after they were treated at the nearby St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center.

“They were in barren metal cages outdoors in single-digit temperatures. A miserable existence just to be slaughtered later,” said Kelly O’Meara, Director of Companion Animals and Engagement, in a story on nj.com.

Since arriving at the US, the dogs have been able to experience some wonderful things for the first time: grass, playtime, cleanliness, and what it’s like to be loved like a pet.

To prevent farmers from continuing raising dogs as meat, a delicacy in South Korea, the Humane Society International provides them with seed money to start a different business, anywhere from $2,500 to $60,000, according to the aforementioned story.

According to NBC New York,”In our experience, many dog-meat farmers are keen to leave this business behind them, and come under increasing pressure from their children to end dog breeding and killing,” said Humane Society campaign manager Andrew Plumbly in a news release.

NBC also noted that the operator of this farm contacted the Humane Society last year for help leaving the business. What’s more, this is the fifth dog meat farm that they have been able to help shut down.

The rescued dogs will be given treatment and evaluation, then sent to different shelters, mostly throughout the northeast. If you are interested in adopting one of these rescue pups, contact St. Hubert’s for more information.
