Elderly Volunteer Saves Blind Dog With Cancer From Death Row

Marcie is a homeless, blind dog with terminal cancer. She was in terrible shape when she arrived at the Kenton County Animal Shelter in Covington, Kentucky.

Dogs like Marcie don’t have a lot of time in a shelter setting, and considering her condition, it seemed hopeless for her to ever be adopted.

But Marcie’s life was saved by a kindhearted man named Bill Baker. Bill, a 71-year-old man, is an animal lover. He has been volunteering at the shelter for 3 years and he has three dogs. And when he saw Marcie, it was love at first sight.

When Bill took Marcie to the vet, she confirmed that she has cancerous tumors all over her body. But that didn’t stop Bill from adopting Marcie. He was determined to give this sweet dog the love she deserves.

Bill told ABC News:

“It was love at first sight. In spite of all the adversity she has, she has a very sunny disposition. I think dogs can smile and she can smile. She can’t see…but when I say ‘Papa’s here, Marcie!’ she perks up and smiles and it just makes my day.”

Bill and Marcie’s love for each other is unconditional. The health issues don’t matter, age doesn’t matter–all that matters is the love and friendship they share.

Most shelters find it hard to adopt out older dogs. We should learn from Bill and Marcie. Older dogs have so much love to give, and are often calmer and fully trained.
