What You Might Not Know About Emus
Emus are part of the same family as ostriches, though they’re a bit smaller. On average, they stand around 5 feet 8 inches tall, with males weighing about 110 to 121 pounds, and females being just a little heavier. Unlike most birds, emus can’t fly — their wings are very small and grow only up to eight inches. Baby emus are born with stripes that help them hide in tall grass and bushes, keeping them safe from danger.
How Emus Start Their Families
When it’s time to mate, the female emu lets out deep, drumming sounds to get the male’s attention. The male then prepares a nest in his area, and the female joins him there. A single nest might hold between 15 and 25 eggs, which are laid by different females. After that, the males take full responsibility — they sit on the eggs for about 56 days, not eating, drinking, or even using the bathroom during this time. Once the chicks hatch, weighing only about one pound, the father stays with them for five to seven months. These young emus grow up quickly and can start their own families at around two to three years old.
